It can be said that reality television offers a superficial reality, which takes away from the cultural values of society. However, to what extent is this statement a fact or an exaggeration? One could say that reality television offers a glimpse of what life looks like for people of power, royalty or wealth. This provides a daily view of what it may look like to live like these people. Thus, this glimpse is aimed to strictly entertain and not deceive. On the other hand, most of these lives do not offer a real sense of a “normal” life. Therefore, these bombardments of false realities pose a threat to our cultural values. Since these shows only portray individuals of power, wealth and royalty people assume this is what is expected of them. This creates a negative image of the expected cultural values. They begin to idolize the decisions that the celebrities make and consider them justified. The negative impacts of the shows can be seen as people have begun to mimic the celebrities within the shows. Thus, these shows aim to sell this unpractical lifestyle as desirable. Additionally, the name “Reality Television” demonstrates how this form of media tries to sell what “reality” looks like. However, the lifestyles portrayed in the shows are typically as far away from reality as possible. Thus, the people who tend to watch these shows cannot help but follow their lifestyle choices. As a father of a young girl I would never want my daughter to watch a show such as “Keeping Up With the Kardashian’s”. In the “Kardashian Show” the females rarely work and place a great emphasis on beauty, partying and wealth. Just based on the name it tells any viewer that this is the expected lifestyle and they need to “keep up”. This could have severe impacts on a young girl who thinks this lifestyle is normal. Keeping Up with the Kardashians is a stereo-typical reality show that focuses on attention grabbing antics and high impact drama. When “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” made their debut, it brought something new to the table of reality TV causing the viewers to go wild. While the Kardashians audience consists of middle age to adult women, there are still a large amount of fans that are men. Many of the characters in the Kardashian family are known for their vain, arrogant and high strung personalities. Stereo typical portrayals of how women should react are shown throughout the show. Multiple viewers continues to embrace the illusions that all women are cranky and vain, only interested in living a luxurious lifestyle.

Reality programs have dominated television networks since their rise in popularity began in the early 1990s with MTV’s The Real World. The reality genre quickly gained viewership as it redefined the formulaic set up of televisions shows from the past. Reality television has infiltrated television because networks prefer lower budgets for their programs that will also generate high ratings (Hasinoff, 2008). People watch reality shows because they are intrigued by the seemingly “real” drama with ordinary people as characters (Dubrofsky, 2006). Now at its peak of growth, reality television evokes ideas of social order and cultural norms to its audiences, while renewing racial stereotypes in modern society (Mendible, 2004). My purpose of the review of literature is to examine and analyze reality television’s influence on people’s perceptions of cultural roles and racial stereotypes.
Kids are very impressionable human beings, they see one thing and they begin to imitate this thing. Reality TV enables kids to think for themselves. Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality.
