Strength doesn’t come from what one can do . It comes from the things one overcomes. The dictionary definition of strength is “the quality or state of being strong”. Some synonyms for strength are “fortitude”, “mettle”, and “courage”. Some antonyms for strength is “weakness” and “devitalized”. It’s important because strength is what people need to overcome all the obstacles they face. A lot of people go through different things in their life but one thing they all have in common is strength. All human beings need strength, physically and mentally. The poem explains her hardships. Reading poetry is different from reading prose because you really have to dig deeper and study harder. A poem is not always straight forward like many other writings. You have to use context clues and understand imagery, tone, and sense. Summarizing a poem becomes difficult if you do not re-read several times. Until I felt the effects of sacrifice last year, I never knew what strength truly meant. At the time strength did not seem possible during my husband‘s year long deployment. A favorite quote of mine by an unknown author matched my situation. “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” During this year long sacrifice, I found strength not only in myself but also from the love between me and my husband.

When you have the will to do something or you feel strong enough to accomplish something you do not need physical strength. An example of this is when Gandhi had his biggest protest in 1930. He led over thousands of Indians on an over 200 mile march to a town on the coast. The reason they did this is to stand up to the British which had a monopoly on salt. 60,000 people were arrested including Gandhi which shows even though they weren’t strong enough to stand against the law they still achieved their goal of protesting the salt monopoly. We have all been faced with countless tragedies in our lives such as the loss of a loved one or a divorce, which have tested our personal strengths. Her grandson is what keeps her where she is at his sickness pleads for her to stay and take care of him and yes she can go places but the thought of him brings her back every time. My five greatest strengths according to the StrengthsFinder survey are activator, restorative, achiever, command and relator, in rank order. Upon reading about these strengths, I can see how I have used and will continue to use them. I was aware of these strengths, for the most part, but while researching I was able to learn a few things. One article that stood out to me was “Don't let your strengths become your weaknesses” (Kaiser, & Kaplan, 2013). In this article, the possibility of strengths becoming weaknesses when overused was discussed. The authors explained how overdoing can be just as purposeless as under doing. The ability to read and respond adeptly is crucial in handling challenges, they explained. As with everything else in life, balance is key!
Strength is having the courage to carry on during hard times. No matter what was happening in the lives of the characters they still kept going on throughout their lives. One example is when Big Mama died and she normally held the family together. The family had to continue their lives without her and this could have been hard for them to do.
In this last scene, Mama proves to herself that you do not need an education, or generation knowledge to be able to posses strength. For Mama had inner strength all along, she just needed her true rich and beautiful beliefs of her heritage to shine through, and they did.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. As Roth states in Strengths Finder 2.0, we as a present day world tend to focus on and try to overcome our weaknesses rather that building up our strengths. Using our natural talents can help us do the best we can and help us be a better asset. After taking the strengths assessment, I found that my top five strengths themes ended up being: relator, discipline, competition, responsibility, and significance.

My friend Ivery, my dad, and my sister can be boldly described as a strong person in so many ways. In order to be characterized as a strong person you have to be stable-minded, courageous, and honest.
