Despite taste in music, age or nationality, everyone is bound to know the famous rapper, Eminem. Many eagerly awaited his return to the music industry; while some hoped to never see his name on the charts again. After a long break from the industry, Eminem made his return in 2010, rising to the top of the charts once again. Critics have claimed his lyrical content is inappropriate and effects the nation’s youth negatively, but his fans argue that he and his 2010 return have been a source of inspiration and encouragement in their lives.
Eminem was born Marshall Mathers III on October 17, 1972. His home life was extremely troubled. He was raised by his mother who was only 15yrs old when she gave birth to him. His father left when he was only six months; he never returned and did not keep in contact. His mother did not hold a steady job, which in turn caused them to move often. He switched schools several times a year. He was bullied at school often and even beaten to the point of hospitalization once. They moved back and forth between Missouri and Detroit. Finally at the age of twelve they remained in Detroit, Michigan. Due to failing the 9th grade three times, Marshall dropped out of school; continuing in his life of trials and poverty. at age twenty six he and his girlfriend, Kim, had their daughter Hailey.
Most rappers and all successful ones were black at this time. Despite the fact that Eminem was a Caucasian and rejected by most other local rappers he pursued his passion. He entered into “Rap battles”, which freestyle rapping against an opponent. It was rap battles that lead him to fame, when someone from the Aftermath record label asked for a demo cd. June 16th, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York. Lesane Parish Crooks was born. Left by his father, Alice Williams, Tupac's mother changed his name from Lesage to Tupac Amaru Shakur. Tupac has moved from Oakland to New York and back again. When he was fifteen he was into writing rap lyrics and gang related subjects. By the time Tupac was eighteen he had been arrested eight times, even serving eight months in prison after being convicted of sexual abuse. Tupac studied the teachings of a war strategist known as Machiavelli in prison.
Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971 in New York City to Afeni Shakur, a Black Panther member since 1968. She gave birth to him 2 months after she was released from Women’s House of Detentions in Grenwich Village. She was charged with conspiracy to bomb several New York public locations and just had her bail revoked. In court she represented herself and won against the state of New York in a surprising turn out. In Incan dialect, his name Tupac Amaru means “shining serpent” and Shakur is Arabic for “thankful to God.” For most of his childhood his crack addicted mother shuffled Tupac between the ghettos of Harlem and the Bronx. Young Tupac began his performance career with the 127th Street Ensemble and then enrolled Baltimore School for the Arts where he was educated in ballet and acting. Tupac was forced to drop out of the school because he had to move to California with his mother, where his criminal career began. He left his house at the age of 17 because of the continuous fights with his mother he then began selling/doing drugs, and was homeless for about 2 years. His life was spiraling down wards at a rapid rate. Till one day he got his big break. Tupac always dreamt about being famous someday, now his dream was becoming a reality. He struck a recording deal with Interscope records. He was on his way to super stardom, but as we all know with fame comes problems. He was involved in the shooting of two off duty police officers, although the chargers were later dropped. He was also convicted of rape, and sentenced to 5 years in Clinton Correctional Facilities.

While Eminem portrays himself as being from Detroit, he is actually from Missouri. He moved back and forth between Detroit, Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri for most of his childhood. At the age of seventeen, Eminem started getting serious about wanting to be a rapper, giving himself the nickname M&M (meaning Marshal Mathers) and later decided to change the spelling to Eminem with the second E backwards as part of his trademark. He failed 9th grade 3 times, then dropped out, “School wasn’t for me” (Eminem). An education was the last thing on his mind. After throwing himself into the rap world on many levels, usually being shut down, he kept trying.
Rap started in the mid-1970s in the South Bronx area of New York City. The birth of rap is, in many ways, like the birth of rock and roll. Both originated in the African American community and both were first recorded by small, independent record labels and marketed towards, mostly to a black audience. And in both cases, the new style soon attracted white musicians that began performing it. For rock and roll it was a white American from Mississippi, Elvis Presley. For rap it was a young white group from New York, the Beastie Boys. Their release “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)” (1986) was one of the first two rap records to reach the Billboard top-ten. Another early rap song to reach the top ten, “Walk This Way” (1986), was a collaboration of Run-DMC and Aerosmith. Soon after 1986, the use of samples was influenced in the music of both black and white performers, changing past thoughts of what make up a “valid” song.

This paper analyzes Eminem’s, “When I’m Gone”, a song whose central theme is premised on the love for family and is evident on his conversation with his daughter, Hailie. I chose this song because of the interesting conversation that brings to the fore the deep emotional ties between the Eminem and Haile. Eminem’s passion for music seems to have taken precedence over the love for his family.
