Electricity is not only used to turn on lights, or make things work, it's also being used in automobiles and other motor-run things. Electric motors also conserve energy and isn't as harmful as a diesel engine or motor engine. Electric motors date back all the way in the 1800's when Thomas Davenport built the first real working electric motor. He used a spinning wheel technique and levers that move back and forth repeatedly. His work ended up being used to move trolleys, but not till 50 years after his death. The picture on the right is an example on how his electric motor looked like. This was used to transport thousands of people each day to work, cities, stores, ect. AC and DC are the two most common motors. You might know AC motors, because they're used to run our air condition in our homes. DC motors came first, and they have certain advantages and disadvantages that AC motors don't have. Both these motors might be different, but they both use electromagnetic fields. AC motors use a primary and secondary welding. The primary part is attached to the wall power and gets energized, while the secondary motors receive energy from the primary motor. The picture on the left is an example of an AC motor, and how it works. Electric motors have six main parts; commutator, armature, field magnet, brushes, axle, and a DC, or direct current, of some sort. Each part does something special to make an electric motor to work. A commutator reverses the current direction between the rotor and external circuit. The armature takes the position of a nail in an electric motor. If you look at the image to the left, that is an armature. It’s made by coiling wires around two or sometimes even more poles of metal. The armature a... ... middle of paper ... ...it reaches a strong torque level once the rotor is running quick. One disadvantage is that its slow to start, which means there is low torque when it does start. It's used in fans, appliances, can openers, and it needs above 123 watts to work. So, in conclusion, electricity is also used in motors, not just light bulbs. Electric motors have been just added into cars to make them more sufficient! Electric motors are becoming more and more popular and also better to use. It's come a long way and has paid off all its work it has done. It's been used to get you from place to place, and provide energy for your household appliances. You probably wouldn't have the nice air conditioning in the summer time if the electric motor was never invented. It has served a purpose and still does today; it has made millions and millions of peoples' lives so much easier.
