To people looking in on families like ours, who are struggling with having a loved one addicted to alcohol, it seems that the few health effects and actions like drunk driving are the only worries for us. We are thankful that is what they believe because if they knew the truth they would be terrified of you. In actuality these are far from being the only things your family has to fear. Your addiction effects us daily by creating anxiety, embarrassment, and many broken hearts.

I know from personal experiences the effects alcoholism has on your life and the lives of your family. Effects like the anxiety your family feels coming home on a Friday night not knowing what person you will be. The hopelessness because we know no matter if we tiptoe and watch our every word you will still find something to be angry about. The embarrassment your daughter feels when her friends are over and you are slurring your words and yelling at her mother. The sinking feeling in our stomach when you verbally attack us and holding back the tears and telling ourselves “He really doesn’t mean it”.
