Consequently, alcoholics tend to overreact to unpleasant situations by using aggression. Furthermore, with excessive alcohol consumption, alcoholics lose their capacity to exercise self-control over their emotions and feelings. Very often, alcohol consumption becomes a means for them to unleash pent-up negative feelings. For other alcoholics, alcohol is a way for them to bury their negative feelings of anger, guilt and depression. Therefore, their general state of mind is moody and hostile, leading to increased chances of aggressive behavior at the slightest provocation (Graham, Wells, & West, 1997, p. 627).
When this occur some people may suffer from Dementia or serious other brain injuries. The damage to the organs can be deadly leading in death because of the consummation of alcohol in a person’s body. Alcohol can lead to many diseases amongst the organs such as kidney failure, liver disease, and etc. The heart which is a person’s strongest organ is also affected by alcohol. Depending on the amount of alcohol intake at a time the heart rate can began to increase within a nick of time.
Many of us know that to be categorized as an alcoholic one is always drunk and acting out of character, but alcoholism is much more than that. Alcoholism is when an individual is dependent on alcohol, consumes large amounts of alcoholic drinks, cannot function socially or at work, and has symptoms of withdrawal while trying to quit drinking. (Dictionary.com) Heredity, conditioning, and environment can contribute to the use of alcohol. One beverage can affect parts of the brain and nervous system. Sensory input then comes into play when alcohol is consumed.
For example, alcoholism causes cancer in the stomach, kidneys, and liver. Besides, alcohol alters the digestion of nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. Alcoholism also causes loss of appetite and depression. There are other effects in the body like gastritis and cirrhosis of the liver. All these physical consequences could cause your death if you drink alcohol in mass quantities.
There can be many causes. Some people began drinking alcohol because of psychological pressures such as stress or depression when they were disappointed about something or having big personal problems. Alcoholics believe they can make life bearable only by drinking. A person also can become an alcoholic while using alcohol during holidays, parties, or relaxing. From this can begin alcoholism, because some people are weak and can't resist the temptation to drink more and more.
It can cause health problems or make them worse." If it is true that long term drinking can cause all these health problems, this shows that alcohol is a huge health threat to your body. Not only does it harm a person’s internal health, but it affects a persons social aspects and behavior. Alcoholism is the most serious form of someone who is abusing alcohol. Alcoholism is also known as alcohol dependence (Edwards). When someone is known as alcohol dependent, it is where that person is completely addicted to the substance (“Alcohol Abuse and Dependence). They do not just want to have a drink or two, but they are craving and desiring that drink to cope, satisfy, or to help that person deal with something. Being an alcoholic is the point where someone cannot mentally or physically go without a drink (Edwards).
Drinking while having depression worsens the case by a lot. Depression originates from the body's response to drinking alcohol; therefore, once the body disposes of the chemical the depression gets worse. Brain Shrinkage Many people say that the brain shrinks when alcohol is consumed, but why is that? When alcohol enters the body, it goes to the reward system in the brain. Some people say that after seeing one person drunk they can tell just how much it affects the brain because of the slurred speech and the impaired judgement.
Alcohol abuse has many harmful effects on you and your family. Alcohol takes many forms and people abuse alcohol for many reasons. Some people drink for fun, some people drink because they are anti-social, and some people drink because they have anxiety and they feel that it helps them deal with their problems.
