Effects Of Depression
John had a decision to make and he had to make it now, he had to decide if he would go to see his doctor or if he should just ignore the symptoms. Many people would say if John needed to go to the doctors because he was sick, than he should just go because that is what you would do if you where sick. What you don’t know about Johns symptoms is that he is depressed. There are many reasons why a person can get depressed, however this subject is not talked about in public very often. However, many people go through life having been depressed at one time or another.
Depression can be especially cruel in that it doesn't affect just the depressed person, but everyone around them, too. Someone who is depressed can be very difficult to deal with. What makes this so cruel is, that as a relationship with the depressed person become strained to the point where others avoid having anything to do with them, this further contributes to a deeper depression and makes the person feel even more isolated which might intensify the depression.
Being depressed can affect three major areas in a persons life, in the first area it can affect your workplace. Your fellow workers might look at it as though you are a moody person, that goes through mood swings at the drop of a hat. Your boss may look at it as though you have an attitude about your job and that your production level is down and that you just don’t care about work anymore. Your customers may look at it as

though you don’t want to deal with them anymore or don’t want their business, these are a few ways that your depression can affect your job because of a misunderstanding and misdiagnosed symptoms.
Depression may cause you to lose your job without the right diagnose and treatment. It can also affect your family and loved ones also with them pulling away from you, because your mood swings and temper is just to much for them to handle, as the relationship with the depressed person become strained to the point where others avoid having anything to do with them. Life has become unbearable with you around them, so the tend to avoid you. As you go deeper into a depressed illness everything and everyone around you just don’t seem important anymore.
John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him” (page 649). Referring to the theme of mental illness of the narrator, male dominance is also present. John terminates her suffering of depression more as “nervous troubles.” As John believes that her case is “not serious”, the narrator also begins to believe this to be true, due to the superior John has over her.
According to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), depression is a mood disorder that impairs both social and occupational functioning. Depression affects the way you feel, think, and executes the daily task, such as eating, working or sleeping. For an individual to be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
He tells the narrator time and time again that she is sick. He can be viewed as a very controlling man in which everything must happen his way or not at all. John was a metaphor for the type of society in the 19th century. He is the image of a male-dominated culture where every woman and child had to follow the rules without complaint. The narrator is like a child taking orders from the male doctors in her life, even going on to say, “personally, I disagree with their ideas.”
Although the narrator feels desperate, John tells her that there is “no reason” for how she feels, she must dismiss those “silly fantasies”(166). In other words, John treats her like a child and gives her reason to doubt herself. “Of course it is only nervousness”(162). She decides. She tries to rest, to do as she is told, like a child, but suffers because John does not believe that she is ill. This makes her feel inadequate and unsure of her own sanity.
The narrator, speaking out against her husband states, “He says no one but myself can help me out of it, that I must use my will and self-control and not let any silly fancies run away with me.” This demonstrates how John is not treating his wife for anything. He simply doesn’t believe there is a problem. This is one of her major motivations for keeping a journal; she thinks it helps her because she is afraid to speak out against her husband. Every time she thinks about writing in the journal, she relates how tired it makes her. Throughout the story, John speaks out against her writing, because he feels that it contributes to her depression but she writes anyway, feeling that she is getting away with something. John treats her as if she were ill not depressed. John being a physician, not a psychologist, prescribes her medication that is for someone who is physically ill, not experiencing psychological distress. The journal becomes an outlet for her true feelings that she believes would get her incarcerated if anyone else heard them. When she writes she states, “I think sometimes that if I were only well enough to write a little it would relieve the press of ideas and rest me. But I find I get pretty tired when I try.” Her husband who believes that her writing is contributing to her illness opposes this idea while not radical.
Freud wrote that loving and being loved can be utilized to achieve a sense of true happiness and fulfilment in this life. He describes love as “a method that takes a firm hold of its objects and obtains happiness from an emotional relation to them” (p. 7). Freud also theorizes that love does not strive to avoid pain, but instead passionately attempts to reach a positive fulfillment of happiness. Freud specifically mentions sexual love, which “gives us our most intense experience of an overwhelming pleasurable sensation and so furnishes a prototype for our strivings after happiness” (p. 8). By placing love at the center of everything, happiness can easily be found, but at the same time love comes with a certain vulnerability within an individual and can make a person susceptible to a very painful amount of suffering
Depression is a serious medical illness that negatively affects how a person conducts him/herself, and the way he/she think. Depression may include anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, manic depressions. People with a depressive illness cannot merely ‘pull themselves together’ and get better. About 5% of the population will have some form of a mental illness at some point in their lives. Half of these people will also have a substance abuse
Major mood disorders are characterized by emotional extremes. The person who only goes “down” emotionally suffers from a major depressive disorder. During major depressive episodes, everything looks bleak and hopeless. The person has feelings of failure, worthlessness, and total despair (Coon, 2013). Essentially it causes a constant sense of hopelessness and despair, and may be difficult to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy friends and activities. Depression indeed can be deadly.
Depression is an illness within itself that affects the “whole body”. (Staywell,1998) The body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior are all immensely altered when someone is depressed. It is not a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be wished or willed away. For some people depression is just temporary, but for others it can last for weeks, months and even years.
There is a fine line between a person 's morals and what they believe is right or wrong. First off, does one think that building a whole new life form would be ethical? Victor almost plays God when he builds his creation. He does not take into consideration the ethics or morals of science and technology. In order to build his creation, he also robs many graves to get certain body parts. That is just simply not right. It is not respectful to the families of the dead nor is it the norm in our society. However, Victor does not even think twice when he makes the decision to use these body parts. Just as many OCPD victims, he throws his moral and ethical codes out the window. He is only focused on building his precious monster. In today’s society, people take a second look in these situations, but for science’s sake some experiments are being performed that go against the moral values of many and could cause death. For instance, many are questioning if we should seek to treat incurable diseases or extend human life by using organs of genetically modified pigs or cells derived from human embryos. It is not moral to attempt to change the outcome of ones life by taking another. Humans are letting their selfish aspect get the best of them. This is along the same lines as what Victor tried to do. His method of making a life form could also be used to
Depression is much more common than most people think. Because it is essentially an invisible illness and is largely in the mind, it is difficult to correctly diagnose it and most people suffer for months, years, or even decades with depression. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines depression as “a mood disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty with thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal thoughts or an attempt to commit suicide.” Most medical definitions are able to explain what happens and why it does, but after carefully examining this one, we only notice that it explains what happens, but not why. Usually, the symptoms of an illness are...
Ratio analysis are useful tools when judging the performance of a company by weighing and evaluating the operating performance (Block-Hirt). There are 13 significant ratios that can separate by four main categories, profitability, asset utilization, liquidity and debt utilization ratios. The ratio analysis covered here consists of eight various ratios with at least one from each of these main categories. These ratios were used to compare and contrast the performance of Verizon versus AT& T over the years 2005 and 2006.
Major depressive disorder, also known as clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression or depression is a mental disorder characterized by a consistent low mood accompanied with low self esteem and a low interest or enjoyment in regular fun activities. Depression will affect one 's family life, work, schooling, sleeping habits, eating habits and all around health. No one is immune to depression, it has even affected some of the world 's most famous athletes and movie stars like Olympic gold medalist Clara Hughes or actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Chances are you or someone you know will be affected by depression in their lifetime.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression can be defined as a state of mental instability which affects the human body, mood, thought pattern, and relationship with others. Statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health shows that about eleven percent of teenagers have depressive disorder by age eighteen. (National Institute of Mental Health). Teenage depression is one of the issues confronting teenagers in today’s society. Depression can occur at every age in the human life, but it is more common in teenagers.
