Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Orlando Bloom. These are names recognized in a majority of households worldwide. Many people enjoy following up on their favorite celebrities but in some cases things may be taken too far. Throughout history fans have been taking their obsession with famous people to an extreme and dangerous level. From John Lennon’s murder to the Kylie Jenner lip challenge people can be seen causing harm to both themselves and other people due to an unhealthy obsession with celebrities and their want to follow the fandom. While many people worship celebrities and follow their lifestyles closely, through societal pressure and idolization of celebrities as authoritative figures, this fandom can lead to physical and mental danger for all parties involved just as obedience within the military can lead to extreme acts of war such as genocide.

It’s called Celebrity Worship Syndrome and it’s believed to affect about a third of the population. While there are multiple theories on how to define the different groups who suffer from Celebrity Worship syndrome, the Celebrity Attitude Scale created by Maltby, McCutcheon, Ashe, and Houran seems to be the most well developed. ...ty worship or as ancient as the brutality of war however, the reasons are not yet known.
Sometimes the experiences of celebrity worshippers and people involved with war are similar despite the differences between the lifestyles. This may be due to the fact that the causes of the extreme acts committed by both are so similar or by the potential need for both types of people to have minor mental issues. As often discussed, victims of war often suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) which can lead to hallucinations of their past experiences during the post war times. Worshippers “of recently deceased celebrities sometimes experience bereavement hallucinations that are common reactions to grief and loss in surviving loved ones” (McCutcheon) which could possibly be described as PTSD despite the trauma seemingly being petty or meaningless to everyday people.
