The Damage from National Intelligence Leaks

767 Words2 Pages

The American public has little to no idea what it takes to safeguard our national security and intelligence apparatus. Events through our country’s short history have taken place that has helped form our national security and intelligences practices that we maintain today. Such events like the Cold War as a whole, September 11th, and most recently the Snowden leaks have a played a part in shaping the intelligence community. Out of all these attacks the biggest most recent change in directive came after the 9/11 attacks. Before 9/11 we were still in a Cold War state of mind so to speak. We were not as focused on proactive linking of possible threats of various groups to national security as we are today. It is hard enough for our nation’s national security assets to keep us same from possible threats as is, but what makes it that much harder is when our nation’s public opinion is based on the wrong information. The everyday person may think that public opinion has little to no effect on the role of the NSA and other agencies like it, but they are wrong. No other country in the world has an intelligence community more publicly bashed or more politically controlled than that of the United States. All of these factors play major roles in the effectiveness of our intelligence agencies. Events throughout the United States’ brought upon by those that would like to do us harm have been taken and bounced back from by our nation’s intelligence community. Events like the Church Committee Investigations in the 1970’s where the then Russian KGB went to endless lengths to spread numerous propaganda campaigns that were false and malicious to try and challenge the credibility of the CIA. The intelligence leaks of recent years such as wikilea... ... middle of paper ... ...o be facts, but as the journal article states there is no public outrage over that. No public outrage like we have seen with every intelligence leak to date. The NSA and our intelligence community is shaping and changing as the world around as does. It is our right as Americans to be informed by our government, but we do not have the right to know these things if making that knowledge public would threaten our national security. Some things are better left unspoken. Our intelligence agencies today are working harder than ever to clean up the mess made by Snowden and the leaks of the past so that we may have freedom and peace of mind. The events may be steps backward, but I feel that when the mess is finally cleaned up and new and improved policies and plans are put into place then we will be farther ahead than ever before in the worldwide community of intelligence.
