Cruelty of Animal Testing Each year in the United States close to 26 million animals including, mice, rabbits, cats, dogs, and most commonly chimpanzees are tested both for scientific research and conventional research. Animals are tested in treatments to determine how a drug or treatment will affect a human being, and several more health care purposes. This is nothing new though, animal testing has been practiced since 500 BC. Animal testing is both morally and ethically wrong and needs to be put to a stop. The issue of animal testing needs to be addressed because the horrible conditions and treatments theses animals are put through are inhumane. Recent progress in medical research has shown several other methods that are not only cost effective, but save the lives of countless animals. On average the United States spends around sixteen billion dollars annually out of our pockets, the taxpayers, to fund animal testing. The National Institute of Health sets aside 40% of its budget for animal testing. From their budget in 2010, 40% was over sixteen billion dollars. Several universities also fund animal testing to “benefit student research”. The University of Wisconsin - Madison put in a total of 3 million dollars for fighting experiments on mice. Harvard University used a total of sixteen million dollars for drug addiction experiments on monkeys that were inconclusive. These tests have all been done countless times. Why are the government and universities pouring more and more money into something that will not give us any answers? When you combine the cost of the facility, the cost to buy all the primates, and the cost for the drugs to test, it adds up to far too much. Putting taxpayers dollars into something that will eventually benefit the medical field, like more effective ways to test new drugs and cosmetics, will get us farther than killing innocent …show more content…

Separated from your family, friends, life as you know it. You will spend your life as a test subject being abused in a cold lab. Doesn’t sound fun does it? Animals are living and breathing creatures; they feel pain and suffering just like any human would. Animals cannot communicate, but does that give us the right to steal them from their natural habitats for our own personal gain? Animals never get to roam free. A lot of these animals are animals that survive on freedom and need to be out in the jungle. It is not our right to take these things from them. The benefits from animal testing are still unproven and no good has yet to come from this research method. Often, a drug will work on a mouse or hamster but then when used on humans causes harm. The invention of the pacemaker was delayed because of the mental differences between humans and animals. When testing on animals the experiments didn’t show that the general anesthetic methoxyflurane created kidney toxicity and several patients lost all kidney functions. The public should stop buying products that are tested on animals so they will not run the risk of the product causing harm to them or possibly killing them. Doctors should also stop funding animal testing by buying these products and risking the lives of their
