1. From the beginning of The Crucible Parris was just worried about his reputation and didn 't care about his daughter 's well being. He was afraid that if people thought there was witchcraft in his household, he would lose his position as minister of Salem. His greed is demonstrated at the end of the book when he gets upset and cries, not because of guilt or sorrow of the deaths of many people that he could be held responsible for, but because Abigail takes his money. Another example of a character who is only worried about their own personal benefit is Thomas Putnam. When people started making accusations, instead of trying to help stop what was going on, Putnam encouraged it because he knew that he could blame argument on the supernatural …show more content…

Parris, the Putnams, the judges and Abigail all lack integrity and their actions were only for their own personal benefit. In contrast, John Proctor was mostly a good man. He had a good reputation, and was a well respected, honest man with good character and pride. He cheats on his wife, but also feels true guilt for his actions and tries to make things right with her, which is more than most of the characters in the play do. At the end of the play, Proctor is convicted of witchcraft, and instead of confessing, and as he sees it, ruining his name, he redeems his name and dies with honor, refusing to admit to something he did not due. This shows his great personal integrity and separates him from the other characters.
2. Vengeance has been shown all throughout the play since the very beginning of the The Crucible when Tituba is convicted of witchcraft. She realises that if she just confesses, her life will be saved and she could take revenge on people like Parris and Abigail for all the pain that they had caused her. In order to feel like they belong and fit in, individuals will join in a group that they would may not usually participate or agree with. When working with a group, individual opinions and creativity can be suppressed; this could cause decisions making to be poor and minimalise new ideas which makes problem solving difficult. This is known as “Groupthink.” Groupthink leads to irrational actions, as already seen in The Crucible, when similar individuals make decisions, they could be at risk to Groupthink. It relates to McCarthyism in a similar way. Joseph McCarthy is similar to Abigail in The Crucible because they both make random accusations with little or no evidence of what they are claiming and people believe the accusations made because it is an intense time of fear and anyone who denies or opposes the accusation would likely be considered guilty. By discrediting the reputation of some, it inflicted fear on others. A example of McCarthyism today, would be assuming everybody who disagree with Obama is racist. Some people may fear that disagreeing with Obama will cause them to be publicly seen as racists, just as opposing the popular McCarthy could result in being labeled a
