Introduction

Research has been done comparing the violent rates between males and female prisons. It is important to study this theme because it does not only lead to the conclusion of where violence prevalent in male or female prisons, but it focuses on other issues as well. This paper deals with the social, psychological and sexual issues of the prisoners. Furthermore, most people believe that males biologically are more prone to violence, therefore violence is prevalent in male prisons and should have higher rates of violence than female prisons; however, there is more to this idea. This theme will examine the differences in violence between male and female prisoners and what causes them to have high rates of violence.

The main purpose of this paper is to report if the rates of violence are higher in male prisons or in female prisons and why that is the case. In addition, four important variables will be acknowledged in relation to this theme. These four variables are relational violence, sexual coercion, inmates search for respect and the victimization. These factors variables not only help explain the research question, but open opportunities for similar for a similar study to be done. This paper will illustrate if the rate of violence is higher in male prisons or in female prisons and if so why.

Relational violence

Relational violence in female prisons is one of the most important factor regarding this theme because it deals with only female inmates. Most of the research regarding violence in prisons deals with male prisons, however when there is research done on female inmates. The researchers only use one or two female prisons to gain data from. As a consequence there is not enough relevant and specific data found...

...on female inmates. This can give the general public a better understanding on female prisons. In addition, it can inform on what type of violence female inmates engage in with more detail.

Limitation

I was only allowed to use six empirical articles to answer my research question. In addition, none of my friends or family members has spend time in prison. So I was not able to interview someone that has witness violence while in prison. Furthermore , in all of the literature I found authors focused more in the male prison rather then the female prisons. As a consequence this could off manipulate the data that indicates that male prisoners engage in more violence. I think if the authors would of concentrate in male and female prisons equally the findings would off probably show that the rates of violence for both male and female inmates are somewhat the same.
