Recent violence in Africa has resulted in the mass migration of thousands across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. The migration is made by those seeking to claim asylum, most of which will unfortunately be rejected. So far this year, the death toll from the crossing being notably higher than last year, being at 4,646, this November. Approximately one million migrants have arrived in Europe from Africa since 2015, (Nebehay, 2016). Unfortunately, the integration of these migrants has not been harmonious in the majority of communities within Europe. However, the Italian village of Riace provides a unique and welcoming environment for refugees. The mayor of Riace, Domenico Lucano, established the program in order to rebuild the town’s economy and population. A controlled amount of refugees is given access to the various abandoned apartments in the village, as well as access to training, and live and work amongst others in Riace. Approximately 450 migrants currently inhabit the village, making up about a quarter of the population. While the integration has not been entirely seamless, generally the community has been accepting and has benefitted from the addition of migrants to the village, as it has revitalized the what was becoming a ghost town, (BBC News , 2016).
