Ibn Khaldun was a historian and a scholar among other things. He was born in Tunis, Tunisia in Northern Africa in 1337. In the first chapter of “The Muqaddimah”, Human Civilization in General, ibn Khaldun describes man as “‘political’ by nature” (45). I found this interesting because what he means by political and what most people think of as political now are very different. Khaldun is simply referring to man actually requiring some form of social civilization. He gives an example of a basic form of society in chapter two, entitled Bedouin Civilization, Savage Nations and Tribes and Their Conditions of Life, Including Several Basic and Explanatory Statements. ibn Khaldun refers to the Bedouin peoples as a people living by agriculture and animal husbandry. They are a people who restrict themselves from the luxuries of most sedentary people. ibn Khaldun states that this way of life brings them closer to God. Hello my name is Daniel Quinn and today I will be talking to you about the parallels between the film Baraka and my novel Ishmael. To give you all some context before I start, I will explain the premises of both pieces of work. Baraka is a non-narrative documentary film that was released in 1992. Throughout the film there is no narration or dialogue, it is just a compilation of multiple events. Some of what is shown includes natural events, life, human activities and technological phenomenon. The film was shot in multiple locations that includes the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Ryoan temple in Kyoto, Lake Natron in Tanzania, burning oil fields in Kuwait, the smoldering precipice of an active volcano, a busy subway terminal, tribal celebrations, of the Masai in Kenya, and chanting monks in the Dip Tse Chok Ling monastery.

The advocacy of officials towards racial discrimination has made the diffusion of racism inevitable. Accordingly, when Bedouins, particularly the Awlad Ali tribe, visit Cairo and other cities, they describe Egyptians as inhospitable and unhelpful people*. While I was initially shocked by their statements, I came to realize that “hospitality” is such a relative term, for in the presence of racial discrimination, how on earth were these Bedouins going to see the hospitable side of Egyptians! Furthermore, such an outwardly biased system will no doubt advocate the formation of stereotypes towards “inferior” groups, and it will help create a correlation between stereotyped traits and life chances.
The Neolithic Period, which includes events from 12,000 years ago, is one of the most important revolutions to occur in history. The Neolithic lifestyle was established first in the Middle East, and then later in the Yellow river basin in China, which then spread over the years into the Western Hemisphere. During this time period, the domestication of plants and animals and the development of cities was starting to become more prominent and well known to many different civilizations across many different countries. It consisted of many changes in human cultures from a lifestyle of hunting and gathering to one of farming and settlement, which supported a larger population. As civilizations expanded, so did traditions and techniques. A major technological and cultural change to modern ways of thinking and acting began in Western Europe, and from these beginning new approaches to science and law spread quickly around the world. It spread to countries, causing more people to become aware of when and where to properly irrigate a crop, which type of area had the best security, and other common living strategies. Surely enough, many years later, traditions are the same as they were thousands of years ago. Although traditions may not have changed, the way people think about their God and religions have changed from culture to culture. Throughout the years, men and women from the Middle West completely changed their relationship from nature, to a more independent lifestyle; human beings learned to have more control over their lives.
Egyptian culture and the American culture are similar in their beliefs and industrialism, style and beauty. Egyptians and Americans both used and cultivated the natural raw materials around them, example Egyptian use silk for clothing and Americans use cottons and many different textual from the lands. Each culture thrived off the land and religion is a big part of life.
Romantic gestures have been seen as a useful motive to win hearts of women for centuries. However, as society constantly changes, the effectiveness of these chivalrous acts has diminished. In James Joyce’s “Araby” and John Updike’s “A&P”, this theory is explored, both telling the story of a boy whose efforts to impress the girl of their desires fail. As said by Well’s in his critical analysis of these stories, “Both the protagonists have come to realize that romantic gestures—in fact, that the whole chivalric view [sic] --- are, in modern times, counterproductive”. These stories, despite the differences between the two characters, clearly show that the character’s world is changing, with chivalry becoming more obsolete.
The Egyptian and Mesopotamian religion and society were similar, but their government system was different. The religions in Egypt and Mesopotamia were similar because both were polytheistic, had beliefs of an afterlife, as well as priests who were part of the upper levels of the social hierarchy. Social similarities between Egypt and Mesopotamia included: rigid social structure, dependence on slavery, and authoritative religious structure. However, the system of government was different because Egyptian society was governed by a theocratic monarchy, while Mesopotamia was ruled by a traditional monarchy.
To begin with, I will be talking about the first main idea and that is the cultural norms of the Bedouins. Bedouins are considered the Arab culture’s purist representatives. They are distinct from most people of the ancient time, who preferred living near rivers (bedawi.com, 2015). Bedouins prefer to live in the open desert. Throughout the book, the contrast is made between good and evil, between the pilgrims and the cannibals that Marlow encounters. Going back a few thousand years in history, the exotic and flourishing empire of the New Kingdom in Ancient Egypt existed. Ancient Egypt, one of the world’s oldest and technologically advanced empires dominated Northern Africa. The New Kingdom, which was from 1550-1069 B.C, “was an explosion of creativity, wealth and power in Egypt that would make it the envy of the world” (PBS). During this time period, Ancient Egypt exhibited a golden age, where Egypt experienced political stability, expansion of territory and the promotion of Egyptian culture. Leading up the New Kingdom, Ancient Egypt experienced the cultures and practices of other races, such as the different ethnic groups during the transition of the Archaic period to the Old Kingdom in terms of different factions of ethnicity between Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout history, the way civilizations have changed over time have varied greatly, in the specific environment civilizations where located. Civilizations can be located near rivers, trough arid land, and with predictable or unpredictable climate. With the environment being anything form the surrounding vegetation, to neighboring villages that may pose a potential threat. Civilizations need to establish themselves within the environment has led many to warfare and others to collapse. The specific environment civilizations lived in can be either an advantage or disadvantage. In the introductions of James Joyce's Araby and Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party the main themes of the stories are immediately introduced, as in any effective short story. Through the detailed descriptions of the settings, the central themes of each story are presented. The relationships between the main characters and their respective families are introduced and provide background information which helps to further understand the themes of each story. The main themes of the stories are further developed when the characters are introduced. In the introductions of Araby and The Garden Party the main themes are introduced through the descriptive settings, the family backgrounds, and the development of the main characters.
Ibn Khaldun was historian that followed a particular pattern to figure out the real truth behind history. He used a certain scientific method that he would use to solve sociological patterns, and told the real truth behind history. For instance, he mentioned that there was a historian who mentioned many soldiers between valleys before a battle, but Ibn Khaldun proved this to be untrue because if you were to go there then you could not fit 600,000 soldiers within that valley like al-Masudi said. He would use common sense to write history and learn about sociological theories from particular patterns unlike his counterparts who he greatly criticizes.
The Mamluk sultanate was established in Cairo in 1250 with the defeat of the Ayyubid dynasty and solidifying control of Egypt and Syria. The Mamluks were Turkic slave soldiers and had existed as regimental groups throughout the Ayyubid dynastic area, and were purchased as servants to the state and the overthrow of the Ayyubids by the Mamluks marks the supremacy of the the military slave state in the Islamic world. Mamluk society and rule was largely non-hereditary and presumably implemented to reduce factionalism but in actuality enhanced it as the death of each sultan brought on questions of succession and legitimacy. Sultans were at the mercy of their Amirs, or commanders, both for legitimacy through loyalty and military allegiance and also for the authority to rule. The Mamluk state was largely decentralized as a result, with the Iqta system the representing the primary means of income along with taxation, and a largely disenfranchised native population who due to their non-slave status were barred from administrative or military participation. Rampant factionalism as a result of a military slave state apparatus defined the Mamluk state, at once creating a highly regimented and yet fragmented society.
