A common problem amongst many college students is the shortage of money. While this may be true, many college students are also running short on something else, time. With so much going on on and off-campus, its no wonder we feel overwhelmed when it comes to academics, work, a social life, and extra-curricular involvement. How can you balance your time when there never seems to be enough of it? Developing a routine may help you to discover other helpful tips for better managing your time as a college student. Your parents are no longer around to nag you about waking up or being late. There’s no detention for being late for class or a curfew that allows for sleep. Patience is key while not only learning how to manage a college schedule, but also the environment. To stay on task, some students prefer using calendars or notes in their phones, while others choose to stick to the traditional paper planners. If whatever solution you choose to assist you in time management is not working, do not give up. Most campuses provide academic advisors and tutors to assist in such change when arriving on campus, while looking up to other successful students could be a great resource as well. While getting caught up in studying, class, and work, it is also important to allow yourself breaks. Within these breaks comes your social life. While having a social life in college, it’s also important we remember to spend our time sparingly. As the University of Buffalo’s counseling office advises, “About 25 percent of college students become chronic procrastinators” (Heibutzki).
