In today’s society, childhood obesity is growing at an alarming rate. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past thirty years (OgdenCL, Carroll MD, Kit BK, Flegal KM, 2014). In 2012, more than one third of our children and adolescents were reported as being overweight or obese. The consequences of this growing epidemic are becoming more and more detrimental to our children’s health. Childhood obesity not only causes short-term health problems, but there are long-term issues as well. It is rapidly becoming the “norm” for our society instead of the “exception”. We as parents, should educate ourselves and become active in saving our children’s lives. If we are aware of what the contributing factors are, then preventing this life long struggle for our children will become much easier.
Although, there are many factors that contribute to childhood obesity, poor food choices are at the top of the list. There are an abundance of high-calorie, fast foods available in this day and age. Vending machines are around every corner of our buildings, including our schools. Fast food restaurants are taking over our cities and towns. Even in our grocery stores there are whole departments devoted to convenience foods. Foods that are microwavable and easily prepared by our children. Parents are working overtime and more and more our children are expected to prepare their own meals. These foods items are loaded with sodium, sugar, and fat; and with no supervision, children will consume far too many servings.
Fast food restaurants are everywhere. Busy lives filled with work, school, and extracurricular activities cause pare...

...r children, take them to the park to throw a frisbee or play ball. Go for a walk or a bike ride with them. Our lives are very busy but if we start off by taking them time to exercise just a couple times a week it is a good start.
Childhood obesity does not have to take our children from us. We must educate ourselves and our families on the importance of good nutrition and exercise. If we learn to make better food choices, limit our television and video games, and spend more time outside or at the local gym, we can change these statistics. “Children learn what they live”. We must change our own bad habits first and our children will want to change theirs. Make good choices and decisions and your children will follow. Parents should never have to bury their children and if we do not do something about this growing epidemic that is exactly what will happen.
