Judging by the headlines, Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen appear to be very much the same. They both starred in major movies, they both are famous for their recent rants, they both admit to using drugs, and they both have had recent stumbles in their careers. Many people believe that these two celebrities are poor role models, and that their acting careers will soon be over. It is important that people examine these two celebrities in depth, however, because they are actually completely different. Charlie Sheen is like Mel Gibson, only winning. This is clear when one looks at the many differences that exist.

First, both Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen are well-known substance abusers. Although it is easy for one to put them both in the same category, perhaps labeled, “Crazy Drug Addicts,” their methods and preferences are dissimilar. Mel Gibson is a self-professed alcoholic (Judy Faber. “Mel Gibson Admits Alcoholism Battle,” ). Because of this, he blames alcohol for his failures. Whenever he missteps in his life, he takes the opportunity to point the finger at his addiction. In an effort to overcome this struggle, Mel Gibson attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, but it is questionable whether or not they are having any positive effects whatsoever. Also, most likely due to his drunken driving incidents, Mel Gibson avoids the use of other drugs.

Charlie Sheen, on the other hand, does not let alcoholism define his life. Although he was also an alcoholic (), Charlie Sheen does not allow himself to be consumed with remorse. Charlie Sheen is like Mel Gibson, only winning. He is winning at home, on television, and in the minds of the American people. Gibson and Sheen are similar on the surface: they are both out-of-work drug addicts who just happen to be famous. Their differences, however, far outweigh their similarities. They differ in their use of drugs, their relationships, their enemies, and their outlooks on life. When people think of Mel Gibson, they think of a loser. When people think of Charlie Sheen, they think of a winner. This is the true difference between these two celebrities, and this is what puts Charlie Sheen in a class of his own.
