Celiac disease is becoming a more common autoimmune condition. According to “Oral Diseases,” celiac disease is the most common genetically induced food intolerance. (Rivera 2013). People who have celiac disease cannot properly digest gluten; therefore it damages the small intestine. This disease does not occur at a specific age. It can happen at any time and is accompanied by many signs and symptoms. Looking at chart 1 below, celiac disease can happen anywhere from 2 years old to over 20 years old. There is no actual way to predict when someone could develop celiac disease. However, it appears that a higher percentage of people develop celiac disease when they are of 20 years of age and older. After looking at chart 2, it can be concluded that not many cases of celiac disease are confirmed or diagnosed between the ages of 2 and 4 years of age. Early diagnosis of celiac disease is important as it could prevent the development of future complications. Celiac disease can be diagnoses by blood work. Most people who have celiac disease are undiagnosed because they do not experience many symptoms. Symptoms of this disease could trigger someone to think that they ate something bad or have the flu. It is important to diagnose celiac disease at a young age as it prevents further problems.
