Race and poverty plays a huge role in closing the achievement gap. “Low achievement and dropping out are problems rooted in social and economic inequality” (Boyd-Zaharias &Pate-Bain, 2008). Closing the achievement gap can not only depend on the schools , administrators and teachers, its much deeper than that. In the article “Class Matters- In and Out of School” (Boyd-Zaharias &Pate-Bain, 2008), they first discuss the importance of putting affordable housing in stable neighborhoods. About one third of the Nation’s poorest children have attended three different schools by third grade (Boyd-Zaharias &Pate-Bain, 2008). This is a huge problem as the student will have to readjust to the teaching styles of the teacher and often you will find that what is being taught in one school may not be taught at the new school at the same time. When they change schools so many times during the school year it sets them back and having to readjust to everything, teachers, friends environment also is a problem.

...h the adults in the children lives. The teachers, principals, counselors, parents and community need to work together in order to support our children. Just because a child come from a low social class, does not meant they get a crappy education. If there is one place a child should always feel rich and confident is in school. I believe that children do not know they are poor unless they are told. If teacher, parents, community leaders drill in the students head that they are just as smart, competent and deserving as students from a middle class or upper class background it will make a difference.
The important thing is to help students understand that where you are from does not define who you are, what you do defines who you are. It will take a lot of dedication, resources and time but closing the achievement gap is very much possible. One day we will get there.
