He is known as the son of “ A noble warrior- lord name Ecgtheow” or as “The Great leader”. Beowulf saying in a boastful manner to king Hrothgar of Denmark,“Because all knew of my awesome strength. They had see me bolstered in the blood of enemies when I battled and bound five beasts, Raided a troll-nest and in the night-sea slaughtered sea-brutes” (lines 417-421) from Beowulf: A New Verse Translation by Seamus Heaney. From this quote you see what Beowulf is know for. Which is being a archetypical hero. The archetypal hero usually has some form of journey known as the Hero’s Journey. Beowulf from Geatland is an archetypical hero because his story follows the steps of the Hero’s Journey.
In the beginning of his story, Beowulf accomplishes the first three steps of the Hero’s Journey. Beowulf starts in Denmark then “When he heard about Grendel, Hygelac’s thane Was on home ground, over in Geatland. There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, High-born and powerful. He ordered a boat That would ply the waves. He announced his plan: To sail the swan’s road and search out that king, The famous prince who needed defenders. Nobody tried to keep him from going, No elder denied him, dear as he was to them. Instead, they inspected omens and spurred His ambition to go, whilst he moved about like the leader he was, enlisting men, The best he could find; with fourteen others The warrior boarded the boat as captain, A canny pilot along coast and currents.” (lines 194-201). This quotation shows how Beowulf is called to his journey , and how he accepts it by announcing his plan to sail over the sea from Geatland to Denmark. Beowulf dealt it a deadly wound. They had killed the enemy, courage quelled his life; that pair of kinsmen, partners in nobility, had destroyed the foe. So every man should act, be at hand when needed;”( lines 2702-2710). Even though beowulf and wiglaf slay the dragon king Beowulf dies from his injuries. “ The dragon from underearth, his nightmarish destroyed as well.” (lines 2824-2826). After this tragic loss Wiglaf orders seven men to collect the dragon 's treasure. What remained after was placed in the barrow as a memorial to their great king. Twelve riders circled the barrow lamenting and telling the great deeds of king Beowulf. Spite Beowulf dying in his final battle his story lives on.
