The job outlook for lawyers increases by six percent in the next seven years and I will be going that growth as I pursue my goal to become one. I decided I wanted to become a lawyer last year, while watching the television series How I Met Your Mother. In the show, the main character, Ted Mosby’s best friend, Marshall Erickson, becomes a lawyer because it was his dream to preserve the world for his children and everybody else's children. I then realized that I want to preserve the future for my children as well. After realizing I wanted to be a lawyer, I started to do some research on what it takes to become one. When viewing possibilities for a college fit to teach the job field of a lawyer, I didn't need to look much further than the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The University is ranked thirtieth in the country for law schools and provide a valuable reputation when looking for a job or internship. They provide a type of education that focuses on topics fit for being a vocal lawyer. They also provide valuable class for public speaking and economics, which are some useful topics to be knowledgeable in when looking for a job. The college also has a strong reputation for having a BAR passing rate of one-hundred percent. To become a lawyer a person needs 7 years of schooling. Four years of undergraduate schooling, and three years of law school. The person also needs to take the BAR in the respected state they wish to practice in. Classes that are suggested for looking good on a resume are as follows: English, public speaking, government, history, economics and mathematics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics verifies this idea, saying, “A bachelor’s degree is required for entry into most law schools, and courses in English, public speaking, government, history, economics, and mathematics are useful”(Bureau of Labor Statistics) therefore justifying the need to take these classes to be a better lawyer. Currently, the most prominent skill that I need to work on in order to become a lawyer is public speaking and speech. My largest problem with speech and public speaking is not being able to speak fluently, as I am constantly stuttering. Speaking will be addressed in the future, as currently I am still working on the structure of speech. I will be taking PIE communications which will help with speaking in public. Secondly, the most prominent skill needed in the field of law would be analyzation of information in order to determine outcomes and relevant information. In fact, The Bureau of Labor Statistics says, “Lawyers help their clients resolve problems and issues. As a result, they must be able to analyze large amounts of information, determine relevant facts, and propose viable solutions”(Bureau of Labor Statistics), enforcing my application of current skills to the job field. I have been able to display this skill in my History class which I have an A in. The largest part of History is being able to analyze important information and be able to apply it to the topic at hand. Therefore being proficient at this skill will increase my ability to be a great lawyer. The most important part of being a lawyer is being able to argue and defend people in need.
