Many unique topics influence the variables and roles we play in life such as social factors, cultural factors, personal factors, psychological factors, any many, many more. Much of what makes up our personality is developed from the variables in our environment. However, our personality is also shaped by our religion, personal values and expectations as a person.
Three primary roles that I believe exemplify myself would include being a college student, daughter, and friend. I believe at this particular phase in my life, these three aspects define my drive to act and behave the way I do. In Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory he prioritizes self-efficacy and how it can shape your personality. “Perceived self-efficacy, or personal beliefs, about one’s capabilities to organize and implement actions necessary to attain designated performance levels” (Bandura, 1982). This applies to my personal beliefs that I am a good student who should earn good grades to finish college, all traits I learned from my background prior and during my higher education. This approach includes cognitive, motivational, affective, and selection process which all incorporate to my college student role. As stated in Freud’s Psychodynamic Perspective, events in our childhood can have a significant impact on our behavior in later life. Freud also believed we had the free will to make choices in life. A daughter is role I will hold my whole life with many factors attributing to the development in my personality. With that being said, genetics plays a majority role in my title as a daughter. As Gordon Allport states in his Trait Theory, “..personality is biologically determined at birth, and shaped by a person’s environmental experience (Allport, 1937). Although I am my own person and self, the traits I have genetically gained through my parents have a role on my personality today. For example, both my parents have low anxiety and laid back personalities. Even though I am not identical to my parents, I have the base of a laid back and low anxiety personality similar to my parents. Our personality has a huge influence on our enduring, distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors which influence how we adapt to our world. It’s how we define ourselves, and how others view you. Four main theories have been established on personality including psychodynamic, humanistic, trait, and social-cognitive. A great deal of personality comes from within us. It has to do with likes and dislikes, and how we choose to react to daily things. For example, I have to write a paper. Is that good or bad? Depends on if I like writing papers or not.

In conclusion, personality is a term that refers to the many patterns of similarities and patterns of differences among individuals. There are various ways with psychologists have examined individual differences in personality including the use of genetics. Through this method, psychologists have mainly examined biological underpinnings that contribute to individual differences in personality. While these measures provide some insights regarding personality, individual differences in personality cannot be adequately explained with reference to genes because of the weaknesses of these theories and the effect of environmental factors.
