Human Suffering in Of Mice and Men George suffers in several different way. Since he promised Lennie's grandmother he would take of Lennie and watch over him always George is forced to put up with Lennie's stupidity, like the time when he grabbed a lady's velvet dress in Weed and caused George to lose his job on that ranch. Or the time when Lennie seized up and choked Curly's wife in a panic she would scream, causing her to die and causing George and him to lose that job as well. Lennie made some terrible mistakes and George suffered for each one of them, whether it be having to leave town, or frantically running for his life, George has suffered due to Lennie's bad decisions. If George didn't make a promise to Lennie's grandmother to watch over Lennie he would be able to do what he wants and be more care free due to the fact that he would have more money by himself rather than sharing it with Lennie, whether it'd be buying a prostitute or drinking himself blind, or doing them both at the same time, George would be able to do it if he didn't have to watch over Lennie. Lennie also suffers in a few ways, he suffers financially, mentally and socially. Since Lennie is not the smartest guy, it is very difficult for him to find work. He has a hard time listening and he has a very hard time making good decisions and therefore not many people want to hire him but George is there to help him find work but even though Lennie is able to find work he still is very low on cash because the ranch doesn't pay him what he deserves and what he does get paid is only just enough to live off. Lennie is very dependant on George, Lennie has a hard time making his own decisions, he has a hard time making the right decisions if any, so therefore I came to the conclusion that he suffers in the need of intelligence. Due to the fact that he isn't to smart, a lot of people do not like him and they do not want to be his friend, many guys at the ranch treat him as an outsider and therefore I feel he suffers in the need of a friend, he suffers from loneliness. Curly's wife is the only woman on the ranch and doesn't have a girlfriend that she can relate to or bond with. Curly gets very jealous of his wife whenever she even talks to another guy or makes a new friend and he yells at her whenever he does get jealous and therefore her social life suffers very much. Since her husbands jealousy has such a huge impact on her own life, and since she is the only woman on the ranch and doesn't have another girl nearby to relate to or bond with she becomes very lonely. That is why I feel she suffers from loneliness. Curly and his wife don't get along very well and she does not believe Curly is a real man her and her husband are always fighting and disagreeing with one another she becomes sad and suffers emotionally. She also suffers in poverty due to Curly's lack of money. The 3 main examples of human suffering would be financially, socially and they also suffer in their own mental states.
