Over the past century many athletes have been suspended from sports, titles and medals taken away, and received penalties for having tested positive for one of the banned substances (Timothy Herman 6). A major story that came about in 2013 was Lance Armstrong admitting to the use to performance enhancing drugs. An interview which aired on January 17th 2013 with Oprah Winfrey was the first time Lance admitted to the use of performance enhancing drugs (6). Lance admitted to the use of the following banned substances; EPO, testosterone, cortisone, HGH and illegal blood transfusions (6). In October 2012 the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), a non-profit, non-governmental organization and the national anti-doping organization for the United States (USADA), released more than 1,000 pages of evidence in doping allegations against both Armstrong and his teammates (Greg Beaubien 7). After the evidence was revealed Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, and was to give back the bronze medal he won in 2000 (9). Cycling is a very common sport to find athletes using performance enhancing drugs. For example, eighty percent of the Tour de France medalists between 1996 and 2010 have been stripped of their title after failing a drug test or later finding out they were using banned substances, according to the USADA report on Armstrong (Timothy Herman 6). People are only getting smarter and with that the drugs are going to become more effective and stronger than ever before (294). Both professional and non-professional athletes are turning towards PED’s as a way for them to perform better. This act isn’t only wrong, ultimately it is classified as cheating in which can have a major effect on human bodies during times of performance and also in the future. The future of sports is only going to continue to grow and athletes are going to become better, but let it happen naturally and not because you have popped or injected an illegal substance, in which is banned by he World Anti-Doping Agency.
Steroids have become an athletic advantage to those becoming the best. Steroids first used in the early 1990’s were used by players as an everyday supplement, providing a boost in their game. This has evolved into a daily habit for players and teen accessing a life destroying choices just to be the best for once. For steroids have developments in the scandal with “13 Major League Baseball players, including Alex Rodriguez- the highest paid player in professional baseball” (Woerner). Showing PED’s will destroy the things you love the most, but only “effective in the short term” (Woerner). Meaning that the little amount you took won’t last you a lifetime.
Citius, Altius, Fortius is the motto of the Olympic games. Translated from Greek, it means "Faster, Higher, Stronger". Recently, Olympic contenders have been doing everything they can to live up to that motto. Most do it by training hour after hour, each day. Others try to do it by illegally taking performance enhancing drugs. This is why we need to test for drugs at the Olympics. Drug Testing in the Olympics began only recently in the 1968 Games held in Mexico1. Drugs are banned for two very good reasons: the use of drugs produces an unfair advantage, and it is hazardous to the athlete to take them. While drug testing is now commonplace, the procedures are still fairly primitive and arouse much controversy2. We all remember the Andreea Raducan situation from the Sydney Olympics. She unknowingly had consumed a performing enhancing drug that was in her cold medication. Her medal was revoked as soon as the drug test results got back.3 While Andreea was caught, many others who intentionally "doped up" weren't Many of the drugs or procedures out there, still can't be tested for, and more and more athletes are cheating. Most of the drugs and procedures have adverse long term effects, some resulting in death. The drug tests are detrimental to the existence of the Olympics and need to be upheld at all costs.
The question of drug use among athletes in what was previously considered by the unknowing public to be a rather pristine sport, cycling, is important in that it will affect all future Tours and will place them and the athletes under scrutiny. To begin with, in Europe until the 1998 scandal occurred, despite a few exceptions, cycling was considered a drug free sport. The 1998 drug scandal tarnished the Tour de France and the reputation and image of other sports. The media response to the scandal took differing positions on what should be done next to clean up cycling. The scandal also affected advertisements, sales, and without question the 1999 Tour and Lance Armstrong. Since even the most naïve fan no longer trusts the cyclists, drug-testing procedures have been instituted. Also, the question now arises regarding medications used by seriously ill cyclists.
Human beings have always had a strong competitive nature, and many people have a inclination towards achieving fame and glory. Professional sporting events measure the great spirit, unique natural talents, and competitive nature of humans as they attempt to heroically represent the entire race. The revelation of PED use by star athletes has been a repeating occurrence in the world of professional sports. These allegations quickly turn legacies into scandals, for what one person once stood for throughout their career is now quickly overshadowed by the insert of a needle. The question then is, what if they were made legal? what would the reaction be and how would it change each respective league if PEDs were now allowed on the playing field? Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports.
