The ancient civilization Pueblo existed around 100 to 1300 AD. This civilization was generally located on the boundaries of states that we know today, which are the Southwestern part of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and some even lived in Texas. The North American Pueblo people lived in dessert areas, and areas with bordering cliffs and mountains. In 1300 AD they disappeared from much of their homeland at the height of their success towards the end of the 13th century. The Pueblo left their entire region. The modern Pueblo clans and tribes is dated to 1600 AD and onward.
Subsistence patterns and environment 10pt ME
The subsistence pattern of the ancient Pueblo people often relied on farming, gathering, and hunting for food based on what could be provided by the land they inhabited. Pueblo settlements on waterways relied mostly on farming for food in addition to hunting and gathering. Other pueblo settlements however, relied mostly on hunting and gathering and in place of farming these people relied on wild foods. Traditionally, women did most of the agricultural work while men hunted. As hunting diminished in the area men began helping with agriculture as well. Corn was the main and sacred food source to Pueblo life. Other popular agriculture included beans, squash, seeds, and yucca fruit. Big game of deer and bison were popular when available. The more common meat meal was the domesticated turkey.

Why is it significant that the Pueblo tradition of story telling makes no distinction between types of stories, such as historical, sacred, or just plain gossip?
Indian nations like the Cheyenne Tribe, the Choctaw tribe and the Navajo tribe are often overlooked, though they have been quite influential in our history as a continuously growing world. Modern culture and society cares nothing for the start of the tribes, nor their modern state, their help to our beginning and continuance, or to the modern culture and society of those indian tribes.
The lives of Native Americans from as early as 800 B.C.E. in present-day Mexico and Central America depended heavily on the knowledge and technology passed down from previous tribes. The impact this has had on developing Mesoamerican societies can be seen in records of their history. Having the way of life of a tribe documented can help prove the significance of these accomplishments.
The Pueblo Indians religious history is different than the average Christian religion history. Their religious beliefs are based on the creation of life. The persons seen as the creators of life are the centrality and the basis of their religion. In the early 1900’s these Indians were looked upon in different lights. White man compared the Pueblo rituals and religious routines with his own. Pueblo religious beliefs, practices and social forms were criticized, scrutinized and misunderstood by white Christian American settlers. The major religious practice and worship of the Pueblo Indians involved ritual dances. White men attempted to stop these Puebloan ritualistic dances because they did not meet his own religious standards and this happened before the Indians had a chance to explain or define what their dances really stood for. 3. Some of the early sedentary groups in nowadays USA were the Cahokia, Anasazi, and the Acoma. The Cahokia settled in Wisconsin around the Mississippi valley area, the Anasazi settled in the Chaco Canyon in northern new Mexico, and the Acoma settled in a Pueblo settlement in New Mexico, which is also known as "Sky City". Some societal characteristics of these groups were that the Cahokia depended on a combination of hunting, foraging, trading, and agriculture for food and supplies, the Anasazi built apartment-like structures along the faces of cliffs, and the Acoma have the oldest, continuously inhabited site in the current-day United States.
The Native American Indians have faced so many adversities of which some have kept them from flourishing. For example placing them in reservations has greatly decreased their chance to progress in life. They always have had to evolve their lives due to the changes of the environment due to the settlers. This inhibited them from having a solid place where they could settle and setup a foundation for their lives. The concept of freedom had been carried on throughout the history of the United States, yet it has failed to be carried with treating the American Indians. Reservations have been seen as the United States showing their gratitude towards the American Indians, but Carlos Motezuma who wrote What Indians Must do sees it as a wall of progress for them and must be done away with.
The Navajo Indians used to live in northwestern Canada and Alaska. 1,000 years ago the Navajo Indians traveled south, because there was more qualities they had seeked there. When the Navajo Indians traveled south there was a lot of oil in the 1940’s. Today the Navajo Indians are located in the Four Corners.
For a long period of time the Cheyenne tribe followed the buffalo. When the buffalo would migrate so would they. They used all parts of the buffalo for various things that helped them survive. They made their villages easy to pack up incase the herd left. The Women would attract the buffalo with colorful blankets when the men would shoot the buffalo with a bow and arrow. The women would do the cooking in the Cheyenne tribe. The main vegetables they would cook were corn, squash and beans. Their main sources of meat were buffalo and deer. They would make tools out of the bones of the animals they killed as well as make coats with the skin and fur. Most of the women wore animal skin skirts. As noted in the response by Janet Tallman, there are three main themes concerning Ruth Benedict’s ethnography of Pueblo culture, Patterns of Culture, and Leslie Marmon Silko’s novel Ceremony. Both detail the importance of matrilineage, harmony and balance versus change, and ceremonies to the Pueblo Indians. It is important to note that Silko gives the reader a first-hand perspective of this lifestyle (she was raised in the Laguna Pueblo Reservation), while Benedict’s book is written from a third-person point of view. Because of this, it was fairly easy to see how much of the actual culture was overlooked or misinterpreted in Benedict’s work. While the above-mentioned themes about Pueblo Indians were indeed mentioned in her book, Ceremony allows the reader comes away with a better understanding of why they lived as they lived, and how their lifestyle choices impacted every decision they made. As in my first assignment, my interpretation of the books was that Silko’s was from a much more personal perspective; a luxury provided because her book is to be enjoyed as a fictional novel instead of an academic text.

Kathryn book Life in the Pueblo is based on excavations that she did at Lizard Man Village (Kamp, 1997). This was a small pueblo located in Arizona which is believed to be inhabited between 11th and 13th century. These ancient excavations were first carried out by United States Forest Service and were parts of Grinnell College field school (Kamp, 1997). The aim of the book was to describe Lizard Man Village and present excavation processes and analysis. Kamp 1997 offers archaeological interpretation of the site in relation to the past understandings. She bring out successfully three narratives. These narratives include ethnographic data in relationship to traditional accounts from Hopi (a place which is believed to be the first resident of Lizard Man) (Kamp, 1997). He also bring out clearly the issue of archaeology as well as fictional account basing it on both ethnography and archaeology.
The Pawnee way of life was a big contrast from the other tribes on the Great Plains. While a majority of the tribes in the Great Plains were hunters, the Pawnee were very agricultural. They had set villages where they cultivated crops. The Pawnee’s culture and rituals were based on growing and harvesting corn. The most popular forms of corn grown were blue and white corn. These people, named Native Americans or American Indians, have a unique and singular culture and lifestyle unlike any other. Native Americans were divided into several groups or tribes.
