In the speech, "Ain't I a Woman?" Sojourner Truth gives examples of how she was robbed of womanhood and the amazing gift of motherhood. As a slave in the late 1700's to early 1800's, Truth is used for manual labor. Many people would expect Truth has gained others respect due to her unyielding work as a slave, but in reality all she wants is the respect of being a mother. The time period in which this speech is given gives Sojourner Truth the opportunity to explain her relations with white men and women and testify to the unequal treatment she has received. He mentions how tough it can be for women to juggle a demanding career while raising a family. Both text reference what honor motherhood is but they also admit the demanding workforce can determine how successful a mother they can be. Women today may not face slavery, but they face double standards that limit them to be successful professionals and parents. Throughout Sojourner Truths speech she makes several claims about stereotypes, motherhood, hard work, and her relationships with white men and women. By stating she's got robbed of the opportunity to become a mother shows how unfair life in the early 1800's was for women but more importantly African-American females. Motherhood is the main point of focus in both forms of text. While is Truth's speech she talks about motherhood being robbed from her due to slavery, Obama talks about Michelle's motherhood being stolen by her career. Both of these examples are heart breaking and sorrowful because as a women becoming a mother is one of the greatest gifts of all time. As far as the workforce goes Truths labor is back breaking manual labor that causes a disconnect in her womanhood Michelle's work is tedious, time consuming, and can cut into time with her children. Another important similarity in both of these text are the stereotypes. Truths are racial stereotypes and Michelle’s are gender. All of the similarities in the text give the reader an insight on how women feel on a daily basis because we can be robbed of motherhood, be pressured in our workforce, and have stereotypes put on us. Although these texts were written in different time periods they show the reader women go through many of the same struggles women went through 100's of years ago today. Both of these figures, Truth and Michelle are very strong women who know how to impact a large group of people to make them realize that stereotypes of women are cruel and the world should learn to move on and unite as a whole to create a stronger more effect community.

After she became free, she changed her name from Isabella Van Wagner to Sojourner Truth. She wanted to travel around the nation speaking truth to the people, which is what her name defines. One thing I love about Sojourner, is the fact that she changed her name after she was free. She took advantage of no longer being owned, and the name she chose is so powerful. I began to wonder how she chose a name so powerful even though she couldn’t read or write. I am a believer that God does everything for a reason and he directly gave her the task to travel and connect with the people, and that the name just came with part of God’s plan. Truth and Stewart had a lot of similarities in what they believed in and what they fought for. The speaker was also a radical Christian Feminist who advocated for everyone to be given total freedom and the rights to all Civil Rights. She was a women’s rights advocate as well. Similar to Stewart, she also used a lot of political and religious information throughout her literary work. Truth was well known for her speech “Aren’t I a Woman” delivered at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in 1851. In this speech Truth voiced her thoughts on how she feels women are equal to men, and why we should treat them as such. Truth says, ‘’I have heard much about the sexes being equal. Sojourner finishes the initial emotional connection with her audience through her religion. By making biblical references, Sojourner’s mostly Christian audience related to her as a fellow Christian and responds more positively to her stance on equality. Through these personal anecdotes, Sojourner invites her audience, who are mostly women suffering from their own forms of discrimination, to realize the injustices of which they too are victims. Sojourner plays on the emotions of her audience in order to grab their attention and their willingness for change by sharing her own personal feelings to which they can relate. Sojourner continues her speech with rhythm and repetition, building up an energy in her voice and audience with a brief personal experience followed each time with that same rhetorical question.
In “Ain’t I a Woman” Sojourner Truth expresses her view on women's rights and tries to advocate equal rights for men and women at the Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio 1851. At this time slavery was still occurring down south African American males along with both African-American, and white women felt as if everyone should have equal rights. Truth got her point across by using rhetorical devices in her speech to persuade her audience.
Deborah Gray White was one of the first persons to vigorously attempt to examine the abounding trials and tribulations that the slave women in the south were faced with. Mrs. White used her background skills acquired from participating in the Board of Governors Professor of History and Professor of Women 's and Gender Studies at Rutgers University to research the abundance of stories that she could gather insight from. It was during her studies that she pulled her title from the famous Ain’t I A Woman speech given by Sojourner Truth. In order to accurately report the discriminations that these women endured, White had to research whether the “stories” she was writing about were true or not.
Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Olaudah Equiano all have extremely interesting slave narratives. During their lives, they faced plenty of racist discrimination and troubling moments. They were all forced into slavery at an awfully young age and they all had to fight for their freedom. In 1797, Truth was born into slavery in New York with the name of Isabella Van Wagener. She was a slave for most of her life and eventually got emancipated. Truth was an immense women’s suffrage activist. She went on to preach about her religious life, become apart of the abolitionist movement, and give public speeches. Truth wrote a well-known personal experience called An Account of an Experience with Discrimination, and she gave a few famous speech called Ain’t I a Woman? and Speech at New York City Convention. In 1818, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, Maryland. When he was older, he made an escape plan by disguising himself as a sailor and going on a train to New York. When he became a free man, he changed his name to Frederick Douglass and married Anna Murray. He went on to give many speeches and he became apart of the Anti-Slavery Society. Douglass wrote his story From My Bondage and My Freedom and became a publisher for a newspaper. In 1745, Olaudah Equiano was born in Essaka, Nigeria. Equiano and his sister were both kidnapped and put on the middle passage from Africa to Barbados and then finally to Virginia. He eventually saved enough money to buy his freedom and got married to Susanna Cullen. Equiano wrote his story down and named it From the Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Truth shows her credibility as a black mother by recalling anecdotes of her life in which she was treated as less because of her skin color and sex, applying these to establish the wisdom she has gained through the hardships she wants to be a thing of the past. She uses her experiences to convince the audience of the reality of this injustice, citing the children she had to give away and the religious reasons men hold women inferior. The speech was written because of its power and influence on the movement and the language and strategies she utilized played a huge role in it. Sojourner used her experiences as an enslaved woman and mother to build a connection with her audience. Black men in the audience could relate to her struggles as a slave and white women as a mother. Sojourner had showed her audience that a person can experience multiple systems of oppression and their presence should not be erased. Sojourner also repeatedly asked “and ain’t I a woman?” after her every rebuttal of sexist and racist stereotypes of women, which arguably was directed to the white women in the audience. The women’s rights movement solely focused on the experiences of white women under male dominance. By highlighting her experiences as a black woman and following it with asking “and ain’t I a woman?” Sojourner is calling out white feminists on their shortcomings. Angelina Grimke and Sojourner Truth were both prominent American civil rights activists of the 19th century who focused on the abolition of slavery and women’s rights issues, respectively. While both of these women challenged the societal beliefs of the United States at the time regarding these civil rights issues, the rhetorical strategies used by each of these women to not only illustrate their respective arguments but also to raise social awareness of these issues was approached in very different fashions. The 19th century was a time of great social change in the United States as reflected by the abolitionist movement and the women’s suffrage movement. Two very influential women leaders were Angelina Grimke and Sojourner Truth. Grimke was born a Southern, upper class white woman. She moved to the North as a young woman, grew involved in abolitionism and women’s rights, and became known for her writing, particularly “Letters to Catherine Beecher”. Sojourner Truth was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree; she escaped to freedom, changed her name, and became an active speaker on behalf of both the abolition and women’s rights movements. Truth’s most famous speech is “Ain’t I a Woman?”. While both Grimke and Truth use a personal, conversational tone to communicate their ideas, Grimke relies primarily on logical arguments and Truth makes a more emotional appeal through the use of literary strategies and speech.
When somebody reflects the hardships of slavery, they typically think solely of the treatment towards African Americans. What most people are not aware of is how women were treated, whether they were of color or not. In Harriet Jacobs book, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, she explains “Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women. Superadded to the burden common to all, they have wrongs, and sufferings, and mortifications peculiarly their own.” The cruel treatment towards female slaves and the struggles held by Southern women during the Civil war are disregarded by the majority of people today, even though it is a significant part of American history and still affects society. Slaveholders would often rape and impregnate their slave women, and then never let the women care for their mixed children. Actions like this contribute to prostitution today, yet people still do not consider prostitution a form of slavery. These truths are tangible today due to African American authors Susie King Taylor and Kate Stone. Thankfully, white abolitionist women such as Ida B. Wells and Mary Chesnut were around to stand up for slaves and women.
