The recurring image in the “Lord of Flies” is fire. Fire symbolizes all the boys characteristics and supports their main archetypes. The fire reflects the moods and actions of the many boys especially Jack, Ralph and Simon. Fire surrounds these boys and helps to form the meaning of being left unsupervised and lost on a deserted island. Where rescue is futile because their home country is under attack by an Atom Bomb threat The fire can be significant to each of the boys because fire symbolizes many different things. Jack is a lot like this, in the beginning Jack was Head Boy of the choir group but after the plane crash Ralph was nominated to be Chef. Jack is someone who wants to seize power and control others. So he is usually the one to step on Ralph 's toes and show the rest of the boys who really is boss. Jack continues to do this and Ralph let’s him because he doesn’t want conflict. Jack is the part of fire that takes every opportunity and takes control. Jack is a spark that is overlooked and uncontained so he’s fiery spreads. He is the hero who is obsessed with keeping a fire going to find rescue. He sees the fire as hope and power nevertheless he didn’t properly sustain the flame. In the book we read many times of the fire become overwhelming or even just burning out. “We shan’t keep the fire going. We’ll be like animals. We’ll never be rescued” said by Ralph himself on page 99. He truly believes that the fire is in his control. But the fire is in each and every one of them. They all act like fire under different circumstances. Ralph is symbolized by the fires presence itself. Because of his incompetence to preserve the flame and the other boys, Ralph never put Jack in his place or even took full control. He wanted balance and security. As the climax approaches, Ralph begins to mature slightly as chaos erupts. After Ralph discovers that a ship passed while the fire was out and Jack is culpable, Ralph confronts him and rather than acquiescing to Ralph, Jack takes out his anger, physically on Piggy, the only person at that time intimidated by Jack. Ralph responds by saying Jack's tantrum is a "dirty trick" and tells them to light the fire. All this infers that Ralph is becoming less gregarious and a bit more serious. The evil in man is seen in many parts of life and it could be only be brought out when they have the power and position to do it. First of all, was when the idea of having a chief was brought forth in the first meeting, the narrator stated that Jack arrogantly nominated himself. Speaking of designating chief, when the idea of voting for a chief was brought forth he protested it. This presented his true intentions of being a leader, self-fulfillment and pride. Moreover, Jack was quite inconsiderate. According to the text, when Jack wanted to continue to move to find the supposed beast, Ralph told him to wait for the younger children. He replied with, "Sucks to the littluns!" How can one be a leader of he/she does not care about the welfare of others, especially those weaker than him? Nonetheless, in seek for the thrill of power Jack actually preyed on them; for example, everyone got a piece of meat from Jack's first hunt, except for Piggy, the hunter wanted to leave the younger child in doubt. In the eighth chapter, Jack twisted Ralph's words about the hunters, attempting to sway them on his side, rather than the actual chief. Also, he attempted a coup and forming an alternate group. Another of the most important symbols used to present the theme of the novel is the beast. In the imaginations of many of the boys, the beast is a tangible source of evil on the island. However, in reality, it represents the evil naturally present within everyone, which is causing life on the island to deteriorate. Simon begins to realize this even before his encounter with the Lord of the Flies, and during one argument over the existence of a beast, he attempts to share his insight with the others.

In society and in particular, literature, symbolism is a prominent component that helps to illustrate a deeper meaning then perceived by the reader. Symbolism can be anything, a person, place or thing, used to portray something beyond itself. It is used to represent or foreshadow the conclusion of the story. In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies symbolism of the main characters Ralph, Jack and Simon plays a very important role in helping to show how our society functions and the different types of personalities that exist. An examination of Simon as a symbol of good, Ralph as a symbol of the common man, and Jack as a symbol of evil, clearly illustrates that William Golding uses characters as a symbol of what is really happening in the outside world throughout the novel.
However, as the plot progresses, Ralph faces both internal and external conflicts; from those conflicts he greatly matures. Ralph always has the strong belief that all the children will be saved from the island sooner or later; he is so sure that he even insists that they should have fire at all times to signal. However, when the boys abandon the fire which is symbolic of Ralph’s hope of getting saved, Ralph faces an internal conflict that makes him fear about their future; perhaps they will not be rescued at all. By insisting that the children should keep the fire going, he creates an external conflict with Jack whose values are different. Jack is enjoying life as a leader of the savages, and he fears that fire will possibly end his authoritarian rule over the savages. Both conflicts are resolved when Ralph finally meets the naval officer.
These objects symbolize fear, and violence which contribute to Jack’s dictatorship. One object that symbolizes violence is smoke and the fire. Jack doesn’t care about how far the fire reigns, or how many people the fire kills. The fire also resembles that lack of self control he has. By the end his life on the island he has lost all sense of civilization, and has killed other humans. He also doesn’t think about the consequences of the fire, he lost control of the fire, and burned a lot of his remaining food on the island. If they hadn’t been rescued in the next few days the fire might have killed them, or because of lack of food the turned to cannibalism. One symbol that was shown before Jack took thing too far was the storm clouds. Bad weather started to form before Jack tried to show his power. The worst time the storm clouds appeared was right before Simon died. The storm clouds appeared overhead as Piggy, Ralph, and Samneric were sucked into the dance and chanting of “Kill the Pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in.” Unfortunately for Simon, he stumbles into the middle of the ring they have formed and everybody was bottled up and they killed Simon because they didn’t realize who he was. Jack symbolizes the source of all evil; man’s uncontrollable hunger for power. Right from the start, Jack expresses that he desires power, even when he is held to society’s standards. At the beginning of the story, when the characters are first being introduced, Golding writes, “‘I ought to be chief,’ said Jack with simple arrogance, ‘because I’m chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp” (22). Even when he is bound by authority and the rules and laws of society, he shows a sort of superior attitude. Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos.
When it comes to Jack’s fear of not being chief, it brings out the worst in him and it has an effect on others. For instance, when the boys are deciding on who should be the chief, Ralph wins by a landslide. “Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack’s face disappeared under a blush of mortification” (Golding 19). That is the first physical evidence of Jack being humiliated by Ralph and judging by Jack’s personality, he is not used to failure so it has a big impact on him. In his very complicated and diverse novel Golding brings out many ideas and uses many literary devices. Above all others though comes symbolism of three main important objects being the conch, fire, and "Piggy's" eyeglasses. Through each of these three symbols Golding shows how the boys adapt and change throughout the novel. These symbols also help to show each of the boy's ideals on a variety of elements from human nature to society and its controls.
