What is Metamorphosis? Is it the title of Kafka’s story or it a word that means “a complete change of physical form or substance”(“Metamorphosis”). Well let me tell you that it is all of the above. A metamorphosis is not just some kind of physical change that happens to a person. A metamorphosis is also the mental, social, and physical change that a person goes through. In Kafka’s story “The Metamorphosis” this change is defined by Gregor and his sister, Grete. While Gregor may define the dictionary definition, his sister is the essence of a metamorphosis. The only change that Gregor goes through is the physical change; he changes from a person to a bug. Now Grete goes a more profound metamorphosis and she emerges from her cocoon. She exemplifies both physical and character change. She goes from a person who is silent and basically a nobody in the beginning to a person whom the family looks up to.

The definition metamorphosis, offered above , seems to be honored not only by me but also by Kafka. That is why Kafka not only shows Gregor, who is representing the physical but hints that Grete also achieved a metamorphosis, and hers is more complete due to the hints that Kafka leaves us leaves in the story. You would think that since the title of the story is “Metamorphosis” that the main character would be Gregor because when you hear the word metamorphosis you think that the person will be going through some noticeable change, which is proven correct when we see him as a bug.
