For this book report, I have chosen to read the book, “The Pearl”. The book “The Pearl” has a very strong moral and plot. The book is classified under the genres “Fiction”, and “novella”. The book “The Pearl” has a total of 90 pages. John Steinbeck is the author of this book. The main character in this story is “Kino”. Kino is a poor gentlemen in a relationship with “Juana”. Kino and Juana live on a beach in a bush house. There are many other poor families living in bush houses on the beach as well as Kino and Juana. Kino and Juana also have a son named “Coyotito”. Coyotito is a baby about 2 years old. In Kino’s life, he is hearing music in his head. He hears the music of family, evil, and peace. Everything that goes on in his life usually makes a tune in his head. In the beginning of the chapter, Kino wakes up in the middle of the night and starts to hear the music of evil in his head, Juana soon wakes up and starts to check on Coyotito. While checking on Coyotito, they soon see a scorpion moving closer to Coyotito. Kino and Juana were slowly breathing so the scorpion would not be scared and bite Coyotito. But after the moment of silence, Kino decides to attack the scorpion before it can sting his son, but while trying to attack the scorpion, Coyotito soon gets stung in the shoulder. Soon the news has gone around the bush houses and everyone around has been told of the horrible news. Kino knew there was a doctor in the small town a little ways from them. The town’s people have also heard of the news and the people were on the streets waiting to see them arrive at the doctor’s house. Kino hadn’t wasted any time and he and Juana carried Coyotito into the city to the doctor’s house. And as a result of this greedy wealth, his son is dead. My opinion on this book is very positive. I truly enjoyed this book and it’s moral. From reading this book, I have learned a great lesson on how money can ruin your life, and your family’s life. Some great things about this story is the overall theme, I also loved how the author included very detailed characters. The characters played a huge role in telling the story. Some bad things included in this story was lack of setting. There wasn’t much detail included about the setting. It talks about living on a beach and a small town but doesn’t include much about the country, or the continent. But overall I find this a great book and a great lesson for people of the modern day.
Rejection. Desperate to help your dying child, you go to the one place you can get help and the doctor says no. All because your life savings just isn't enough. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the doctor is guilty of malpractice for breaking the Hippocratic oath: not treating Coyotito because he doesn't want to work for little payment. Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and Kino goes to the doctor to get him treated. Kino asks if the doctor will treat Coyotito, and the guard goes to talk to the doctor. The doctor says that he will not treat the baby unless there is payment. Kino gives the guard pearls, and the doctor rejects them. The guard tells Kino that the doctor has a more important patient, lying to avoid work.

The story starts out during the early morning of a village near La Paz, California. A man named Kino, and his wife, Juana, are sleeping peacefully to the sound of nearby ocean waves crashing on the shore. Kino awakes to the sound of crowing roosters, and to the open eyes of his wife, which he is so used to seeing the the morning. He stands up and approaches his son, Coyotito, who is sleeping in his cradle. His wife, Juana, rises and begins to make a fire. Kino goes outside to enjoy the wonderful weather while Juana is preparing breakfast. After a couple minutes, Kino reenters his home to see that breakfast is ready, so him and his wife begin to eat, but soon they see a dangerous creature creeping up on Coyotito.
Many stories in the world have a lot of the same characters. Carl Jung believed that universal, mythic characters called archetypes reside within the collective unconscious of people in the world. Archetypes are important because basically any story you will read will have archetypes in it. The archetypes in The Pearl are important because without the Hero, Ally, or Loyal Retainer archetypes in the book, The Pearl would have no story. This is why John Steinbeck uses many different archetypes in The Pearl such as the Hero, Ally, and Loyal Retainer.
The aspect of the John Steinbeck novels, The Pearl and Of Mice and Men, that is most comparable is how, in both books, Steinbeck denies the main characters of each book, Kino and George and Lennie to change their role in life or to beat fate. Steinbeck’s grim outlook of life was perhaps brought on through his early failures and poverty, because all three of the pre-mentioned characters had opportunities to change their fate or role but failed. The elements of discussion are Kino, George and Lennie, a comparison and a contrast.

John Steinbeck is one of America’s favorite American Modernist authors. His work deals with the struggle of life, mostly during the Great Depression Era and are centered in and around California. Fortunately for his readers, Steinbeck suffered some of the atrocities his characters suffered in order to bring them his rich experiences with the text. Due to his well-developed characters, pastoral settings, and internal conflicts, high school students and adults can appreciate his writing style.

As you can see John Steinbeck is a great writer. He is great in his use of symbolism and allegory, which gives you a way to characterize his work. If you believe his work should be characterized in any other way you need to check out his novels The Pearl, The Grapes of Wrath, or his short “Flight”. So next time you pick up a book, pick up one of these for a great excitement.
Kino, Juana, and Coyotito go back to the beach and row out to an oyster bed, where he begins to search for the pearl. As Kino continues to search, Juana takes things into her own hands after being refused by the doctor and sucks the poison out of Coyotito and then puts seaweed on the wound, unknowingly healing him. Meanwhile Kino gathers several small oysters but suddenly comes across a particularly large oyster. He picks the oyster up and returns to the surface. When Kino opens the oyster he discovers the pearl. Word that the pearl has been discovered travel through the town quickly. People in the town became jealous of Kino and his family which eventually leads to a great deal of harm.
At the beginning of the book Kino and Juana lived a happy good life until their first and only child Coyotito got stung by a scorpion. The one-second that it took the scorpion to bite Coyotito changed the rest of Kino and Juana's life forever. Kino could not afford to pay for the medical attention Coyotito needed. Kino was determined to find a great pearl that could pay the doctor to save his son. "Kino in his pride and youth and strength, could remain down over two minutes without strain, so that he worked deliberately, selecting the largest shells."(Pg. 18)
The Pearl by John Steinbeck is a classic novella. Steinbeck is a classic author that also wrote The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. “This long story (or short novel) follows five momentous days in the life of an Indian pearl diver living in La Paz, a small port on the Gulf of California,” (Gunn 1) . Kino is the pearl diver, and his son, Coyotito, gets stung by a scorpion, but the doctor will not see him because of race and status. That is until Kino goes pearl diving and finds a pearl the size of a gull’s egg. After that everything changes for Kino, his family, and the whole village.
