There are many different opinions on how a life should be lived, Henry Longfellow's poem, "A Psalm of Life" is a perfect example of that. There is emphasis on making tomorrow better than today and not conforming to the way everyone else lives. Longfellow's philosophy in this poem is to live for today, however, one should be conscious of the future and lead a life that is good and that will inspire others after we are gone. Longfellow has a distinct outlook on life, using a philosophical approach, "A Psalm of Life" is about life as a whole and how its meaning is to live each day as a new day, be original, and to leave something behind that inspires others.

One must be the leader their own life and have control and not be lead, directed, or guided by someone else. There is no 'normal' way to live life or certain paths directed by someone else that must be followed. It is easy to conform to what everyone else is doing but in order to live your life as fully as possible you must be able to step away and stand out from the crowd. The article, "Whitman and Longfellow: Two Types of The American Poet" by Angus Fletcher says, "The case I shall make for Longfellow is that in his own way he is extraordinarily original." Longfellow was the type of person who did not follow the way anyone else wrote and he did his own thing, which makes sense that he would the write the quote referenced above about cattle. Leading a life of idleness can hurt you, " For the soul is dead that slumbers," (Longfellow 5). When you do nothing in your life but go with the flow and make no effort to embrace your individuality you slowly begin to lose yourself and kill your own soul. Considering a philosophical approach, this poem has a positive effect on humans to live a better life. It shows how life is serious yet fragile thing and we only get one shot, one wrong move and it's all gone. In life each day is a new day, and each day can be made better than your last. Knowing who you are and where you want to go in life while making your own path for that to happen instead of being 'dumb cattle' is brave. Living your life to the fullest but not leaving anything behind is like not living at all. These three things are Longfellow's key to living and the meaning of life. At the end of it all life is what you make it, live each day as fully as possible because you never know when it could all
