The novel 1984 is a story about a future civilization that is ruled by a totalitarian government. When the book was published in 1949 the thoughts and ideas seemed to be a prophesy for the future.
A totalitarian government is one of the strictest forms of government with the least amount of freedom for the people. A totalitarian government is a mix of the military, individual leadership and the national political party. Usually the leader is a person who has a kind of charisma that makes his authority inherent and compelling. The leader defines himself as the embodiment of the nation’s will and ideal. The leaders build cults around themselves and transformed public rituals into occasions for veneration. Public rallies and parades were meant to display the strength of the leader. The military would function at the will of the leader and changed to meet the needs of the government. The party is always right and argument is impossible. The purpose is to unite its goals to that of the state. Representative legislative bodies were eliminated although the regimes would give the people the chance to vote as the party wished or to not vote at all so it appeared they had a choice in the government.
They were constantly creating propaganda to improve the looks of their government. It was basically a government that controlled everything. They filled people’s minds with propaganda, took away the freedom of religion, and even tried to control the personal life of the citizens. The government wanted the people to have no thoughts of their own and insisted on having constant support from its citizens. The state controlled everything, your thought, your actions, and even your history.

In Orwell's day, the leading fascists were Hitler and Stalin, and today there are Muammar Qaddafi, Kim Sung-un, and Xi Jiaping, while in 1984 there is Big Brother. All of these governments are very similar to each other, as Orwell had predicted. These points reveal that even though those who live in free nations think that 1984 is dystopian science-fiction, in some places around the world, 1984 is almost a work of realistic fiction.
The novel 1984 is one that has sparked much controversy over the last several decades. It harbors many key ideas that lie at the root of all skepticism towards the book. With the ideas of metaphysics, change, and control in mind, George Orwell wrote 1984 to provide an interesting story but also to express his ideas of where he believed the world was heading. His ideas were considered widely ahead of their time, and he was really able to drive home how bleak and colorless our society really is. Orwell wrote this piece as a futuristic, dystopian book which contained underlying tones of despair and deceit.
In Conclusion, 1984 is a novel that represents a called government. The government is taken over by “The Party”. The Party seeks to gain complete obedience from the people of Oceania. The main goal of the Party is to eliminate independent thought. The book is surrounded by psychological manipulation. Everything that happens throughout the book is government related and tends to manipulate some people of Oceania. Since their government is totalitarian they seek absolute power towards their people. This shows warning of what might happen id our government becomes too powerful, the party is trying to avoid any sort of rebellion from the people.
1984 was a representation of what the future held in store, and how society could change. By creating a leader who people feared and appreciated society could easily be controlled and how one person could control everyone. Orwell predicted the future in a sense with things he noticed in real life experiences and how the world was changing in such an early time. Based on ideas he had, he was correct! We are all watched, we are controlled and the world is in fact changing.
The definition of totalitarianism is, the government which is holding total authority and domination over its citizens. A dictatorship, in this case Hitler, and a party (Nazi Party: National Socialist Germans’ Workers Party NSDAP) need to control the law courts, the media, police and of course, the government. There is basically no freedom of choice and the individual who created this totalitarian government has total control over its people. In any government, there are many different aspects that it controls, and these are especially significant for totalitarian governments. First of all, totalitarian governments control the political aspect of their state, in the sense that the leader basically symbolizes the government and is able to unite its people, the government is also solely controlled by one single political party, and the state is always considered more important than the individuals. A second aspect is the social aspect, in which the totalitarian government controls all features of daily life, meaning citizens are denied their basic rights and liberties, and there is a secret police that uses terror and violence to enforce governmental policies. Finally, the economic aspect of totalitarian governments basically represents the fact that they direct the national economy and control businesses, which means that these businesses and labor in general are used to fulfill the objectives of the state.

The year 1984 has long passed, but the novel still illustrates a possibility for the future of society. It still remains a powerful influence in all sorts of literature, music, and social theory. George Orwell envisioned a nightmarish utopia that could have very easily become a possibility in 1949 ? the year the novel was written. He managed to create such a realistic view of humanity?s future, that this story has been deemed timeless. There will always be the threat of totalitarianism, and at some moments civilization is only a step away from it. Orwell hated the thought of it, and 1984 shows that. From his work, readers who live in prevailing democratic society have a chance to consider about these very different political systems, democracy and totalitarianism.
For a historian, the 20th century and all the historic events that it encompasses represents a utopia with endless sources of inspiration for the analysis of political figures, events and their consequences. Political figures such as Benito Mussolini of Italy, Adolf Hitler of Germany, Mao Zedong of China and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union are all names we are familiar with due to the time period that they influenced; this time period after the trauma and atrocities of World War I and the Great Depression led to completely new forms of government in Europe and beyond. These “manifestations of political evil”, commonly known as totalitarian states, should not be considered as mere extensions of already existing political systems, but rather as completely new forms of government built upon terror and ideological fiction. Therefore, this was also a time in which political philosophers such as Hannah Arendt, the author of the standard work on totalitarianism, “Origins of Totalitarianism”, could thrive. When looking at totalitarianism as a political philosophy, two initial questions have to be dealt with: what is totalitarianism and what kind of effect it had on countries ruled by totalitarian regimes. The reasons for its occurrence have briefly been mentioned above, although there are much deeper ideological, social and economic reasons including imperialism and anti-Semitism.
