A Good Investment

Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817. He grew up in Concord, Massachusetts with three siblings. He attended Harvard College where he graduated from in 1837. After graduating from college, Thoreau wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He was close to his brother who later died after cutting himself while shaving (Henry). He later started working with his father at the pencil factory that his father operated. In the 1840s he began to write poetry (Bio.com). In class we learned in 1845 Thoreau built a small shack on Walden Pond where he stayed for over two years to do some writing. While on Walden Pond, he wrote several well-known books. No thank you, no smile, nothing. They act as though you were supposed to do it for them. This generation makes the quote back fire. The government hands out money, food stamps, healthcare and housing to people and they just want more. No gratitude whatsoever. They have that, give me what I want and then some, kind of attitude. I know people that own their own businesses. Out of the kindness of their own hearts they help people out and are taken for granted. They always go back for more and more. They always expect goodness out of those willing to give and never produce the goodness back. By using the word investment, the author is trying to make it sound more powerful. If I invest in something, that means I purchase something. If I put out all the good I can possibly do, I should receive that much or more back. Earn something to get something in return. If I invest in something, I am hoping to get back a better return. When saying it never fails, the author is trying to make the reader think that it is always good to be good. In other words, if I show goodness all the time, I should receive even more goodness back all the
