The qualities that make a good leader are as varied as the people that fill leadership roles. Some leaders aren’t overly dynamic but somehow get the best out of people while others appear to be too carefree to take seriously. What is it then that makes leaders who they are? A personal philosophy of leadership is that distinguishing trait that every leader possesses. What those leadership characteristics and behaviors are will be explored in the following text, along with what I believe is the best route for me to follow as I work on developing my own personal philosophy of leadership. A personal philosophy is essentially how someone views the world. Each person has a different world view with culture and upbringing’s shaping how people think and act. A personal philosophy of leadership is taking that world view and applying it to leadership. Since leadership is about getting the best out of people; a leadership philosophy would be a leaders plan for getting the best out of the people the leader leads. Personal philosophies of leadership are unique to each individual just as every person in the world is unique. A personal philosophy of leadership is like a road map, without one leaders would be drifting aimlessly without any sense of direction. If a leader is lacking sense of direction it would be impossible for an organization to follow that leader anywhere simply because it would be impossible to set goals and provide direction without having a leadership philosophy. I spent many years without a plan and there is no question it has adversely affected my life. Recently I have been formulating goals and working out who I am, what I do best, and how to use my strengths to get my life in order first. Without ques... ... middle of paper ... ...hat you maintain your integrity as an example for your subordinates to follow. Developing a personal philosophy of leadership is essential for every leader to establish prior to becoming a leader. A leader should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and then develop a philosophy that would best compliment that leader’s personality traits and strengths as a person. Leaders need to have their personal philosophy established prior to becoming a leader because once you are in a position of leadership it is time to lead others, not time to determine what philosophy would be best used to lead. I truly believe that a personal philosophy of leadership should be fluid as the leader continues to learn about leadership and people throughout the leader’s career but the four core principles of integrity, ethics, positive attitude and honesty must remain constant.
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. As a topic of discussion, leadership can be ambiguous and seldom does everyone agree on a single definition. Organizations and the people they consist of crave leadership, even if not overtly. Undeniably, strong leadership is essential to achieving
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.
The word leadership can mean many things if you were to ask individual people to define it. Some may say, “Oh that’s the person in charge”, others may argue that leadership is a “position of power”. I define leadership as the person that others look to in times of crisis and need that they aspire to follow. A leader is always looking for meaningful ways to take care of those around them, sometimes with discipline and others with a calm voice of reason. Throughout my career I have had many different levels of leadership from junior people that would lend a helping hand to senior leaders that always had my back and the answers to tough questions. The most influential person in my career was a First Class Petty Officer when I was fresh out of school and new to the ship. I had never been to sea and was excited to learn. The next three years were some of the best years of my career. Each day we would do nearly everything together when it came to our equipment, we would troubleshoot complex equipment problems sometimes late
It is the nature, vision, and upbringing of the leader which helps them to determine which leadership theory fits them the most. A leader is the one who helps others to accomplish the goals. If there is any kind of intervention in the leadership style then most probably it would fail as the employee would be no more interested to work under the leader. A leader is someone who inspires others, helps them to view a goal and motivates them to achieve the goal. In a workplace, leaders come and go but the important thing is that leader who inspires others will leave a mark for the lifetime. Being a leader is not a difficult job, but leadership faces a jeopardy situation when a leader is incapable to answering the why and how questions. So, one should be very careful while acting as a
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
I believe that leadership is something that should be earned. Whoever is the most qualified and passionate should be the person who leads, not the most popular. I believe that having integrity and expecting it at all times from your team is the best way to operate. I believe that leaders cannot always be the “good guys” in every situation. I believe that it is important to find people who will help you most achieve your goal, but ones who are loyal, passionate, and want to grow personally. Mutual respect in any situation will allow for people to speak their minds, even if it is difficult. I want to help my team members find their passions and help them succeed outside of our organization. I believe that leadership is about encouraging
People take for granted every day that at times they are both leader and follower. Typically, we do not subscribe to a philosophical statement on how we lead. In kind, we do not advertise what type of follower we will be. Perhaps the way we follow depends on the leader. Maybe the way we lead depends on influences and environments we have been exposed to or values and beliefs we hold. It is unusual for a person to be asked to define their leadership philosophy. Most do not realize that theories, approaches, and/or styles of leadership exist. I believe we all develop a unique style of leadership, yet, I feel the way in which it is applied will solely depend on whom the person is. For me, two approaches seemed applicable – Adaptive Leadership
Through leadership, you see the core values of that leader. A leader will express his or her values through the way that he or she carries out leadership. These values shape and form how we grow as a person. We are all guided through life by leadership. Everywhere in your life you will find leadership. From your parents being leaders in your house when you were young to having a boss at your job; both of these are leadership roles. However, some people that are in leadership roles are not easy to pick out. Some of the leaders in your life are “hidden”. Even though you are following their leadership, you don’t even realize who the leader is. Some people that have a huge impact on your life are the quiet ones. They are leading you, but you don’t realize it until they aren’t in the middle of your life anymore. Leaders are not always the ones in the front wanting all of the attention. Some leaders are the ones standing quietly in the background trying ...
The subject of personal leadership is widely recognised nowadays as it is often believed that successful leaders not only have the ability to lead other, but also know well and able to control oneself. In order to understand more about myself as a leader, I registered for this course. Around two months of this course, I have gained considerable knowledge which will be clearly documented in this Reflective Learning Diary. In addition, a separate section will be dedicated to my reflections after completing some personality tests.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
Leadership is what allows individuals to become groups, accomplish collective goals, and be organized in doing so. There are many different types of leaders and they each have their own unique methodology for leading. Leaders who influence through individual action and their own behavior rather than through explicit direction are some of the most effective leaders. The principle that these leaders use is called leading by example. This principle intrinsically motivates individuals thus making them want to carry out a task rather than have to do it because they were told to. Therefore the core principle of leadership is leading by example because it does not require a position of authority to work but rather uses the psychological characteristics of people to change their behaviour. My own experiences and the experiences of others support the effectiveness of this leadership principle.

When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. This philosophy is going to help guide these men during turbulent times, or when they need guidance themselves. Nobody is perfect and everyone needs direction no matter how wise or gifted you are. I am no different, which is why writing this philosophy of leadership is going to be a fruitful experience for years to come.
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
