When people think of leadership so many things rush through their heads. For example am I a leader, am I apart of a group that has a leader, and what does being a leader mean? A common definition of being a leader is a person who leads or guides a group of people. So now knowing the definition of a leader who pops into your head; Phil Jackson, Mike Krzyzewski, Martin Luther King Jr.? All of these people are great leaders, but the real question is why are they so great? One very important thing that all these men have in common is they have a philosophy of leadership. Herzberg’s theory says in order to get the best out of employees a leader needs to create satisfaction in the working environment. Herzberg listed six factors that would achieve this. Those factors are achievement, recognition, work, responsibility, growth, and advancement. When I read this I felt like this is a perfect dynamic to a basketball team. Here is an example that demonstrates what I mean. I recruit a freshman to play at my program, which is an obvious achievement. He is going to work hard like the rest of the team in order to gain recognition, and from this he will gain more responsibility from his teammates. This will speed up his growth as a player, and help him advance into the starting line-up for my team. So Herzberg’s Two Factor theory gives every player the chance to succeed which is going to breed satisfaction in my basketball program. I firmly believe that these two leadership theories, and leadership styles already mentioned are going to help my create a positive atmosphere in my basketball team, and help us excel. This kind of coach wanted me to succeed just as much as I wanted to succeed so when I know as an athlete another person was backing me up and believing in me other than myself it truly helps build my confidence. However at the same time people need a coach who is going to be hard on them to make them better, and push them to the next level. So that means sometimes changing something about their life habits, or changing something about their basketball game in general. Or even as simple as looking things over and realizing this technique doesn’t work anymore, and needing to go about it in a different way. If an athlete trusts their coach to make the right decisions regarding their abilities they are going to succeed so much more. This is why I feel combining Charismatic and Transformational Leadership qualities together are going to bring the best out of your athletes, because they are going to trust the person when he or she is trying to coach
