In the past 18 months, about 800 pedestrians were injured and more than 150 people have been killed by homicidal drivers. These massacres started in July 2016 in Nice, France when a truck struck a crowd, killing 86 people. Other deliberate collisions have occurred in Berlin, Melbourne, Stockholm, Paris, London, Barcelona and New York City. The most recent tragedy happened on Monday April 23, 2018, after a driver of a white van plowed into several pedestrians who were walking on the sidewalk near the busy intersection of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue in Ontario, Canada. Alek Minassian, the suspected driver, is 25 years old and from Richmond Hill, Ontario. He was driving a white rental van when he was arrested about thirty minutes after police received the 911 calls around 1:30 pm. Some saw the suspected driver actually speeding on the sidewalk and striking the people who were in his path. Others saw the destruction of the aftermath, including many bodies on the ground who had several injuries and debris from a car. Bersat Noorai, the manager of Taftan Kebab, was one of the witnesses who saw the initial accident. Noorai said he saw the van hit the bench located in front of his restaurant, which is why he ran outside and then saw a couple of people injured on the ground. He brought one of the people, who seemed to be in his early twenties, a towel and water because he saw that he was losing a lot of blood and then proceeded to call 911.
