On Sunday, January 14, the world was shocked with devastating news of one of the most inhumane reports of child abuse ever seen. In what appeared to be a normal home in Perris, Calif., 13 children, ranging from ages two to 29, were held in a hostile environment under conditions unsuitable for human life. The kids are now safe and undergoing treatment in order to alleviate the pain caused by the traumatic experience and emotional grief that they had thought would be their fate forever.
The parents and legal guardians of these children, David and Louise Turpin, now face charges of multiple counts of child abuse and sexual assault. Since their arrest, many truths about life in the Turpin household have been revealed.

In their controlled atmosphere that they were raised to call home, the children were kept on a schedule at all times. As part of these agendas, they were forced to sleep during the day and remain wide awake through the night. They were only allowed one meal a day, and one shower per year. The sufferers were reported to be considerably underweight, with the oldest of all (aged 29), only weighing 82 pounds. They were so malnourished that when found, police were brought to believe that they were all minors. However, this wasn’t the case. Only six were children and seven were adults.
Seeing that this neglectful way of life was insufficient to their needs, one of the victims took action to save herself and her 12 siblings. Planning the high-risk stratagem for two years, a courageous 17 year old girl found her escape through a window in the Turpin household. Originally fleeing with another one of the children, she was left alone when her sibling grew fearful and returned home. Authorities were finally involved when she called 911 using a deactivated cell
