What does it feel like to be proven wrong? When one tells the truth, people say different. Dance being a sport is a huge debate still going on today. What makes a sport? By definition, a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Through the 3 years of dance, it became a huge part of my life [ethos]. Dance allows the feelings felt by one to presence by telling a story of the song and the movements. (pathos) Without dance, people don’t get the right memory skills or even the ways of working with a team.

Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.
The words “competitive dance” alone say it all. The whole purpose of dancing at competitions is to compete against other dance teams in order to try and win an award. Without the competition aspect, dance should not be considered a sport. Yes, it is a physical activity that involves a lot of strength and time that needs to be dedicated to it. But without the competitive aspect, it would not be a sport. To be a sport, a team has to compete against another team for the enjoyment and entertainment of others (Sport, 1). This is the goal of any competitive dancer or dance team. For something to be a sport, it specifically needs to be in a competition setting as well as have the purpose behind it of entertaining. People do not go to a football or basketball game to sit there and watch two teams just play an equal and fair game with no activity and no winner. If all games and performances in the sports realm were like this there would be no one there to watch them because they would not be entertaining. With competitive dance, there is always two or more teams or dancers going up against each other to get the win. And a major reason why dancers compete is to entertain, because they love the satisfaction of the crowd being pleased by their performance. “I dance because it feels good. So you think you can’t dance? You might want to ask yourself that question again. If you already did, and you still think you can’t, then ask yourself that question several times until you think you can. Dancing is not difficult, you just move with the rhythm of the song. This is not a test; there is no right or wrong answers, or in this case, movements. Yes, you might look a bit funny at first, but no one dances the same, so that should be an incentive for those non dancers to give it a try. For centuries, dancing has been used in ceremonies, celebrations, and entertainment, but the positive attributes that come along with dancing are much greater than what is seen. Before you keep reading, I want to make something clear. No, I’m not referring to dancing as ballet, folklore, or tap dancing; those may be too difficult or “advanced” for many of us, including myself. When I mention dancing, I refer to it as its dictionary definition, “to move one’s feet or body, or both in a pattern of steps, accompanied by music.” This demonstrates that dancing is something we are all capable of doing, we just need to be willing to try. So now that this is clear, let’s continue learning about one of the positive effects of dancing. Dancing has far more positive aspects than entertainment, dancing is a way to release stress and minimize depression, while creating a positive and healthy environment.
Is dance a sport or not? Some people in our world today consider dance just to be all frilly and fragile. Dance takes time, effort, determination and impeccable strength. I believe that dance is a sport because it has the same components as any other sport. In any other sport you need to work hard with a lot of effort, and that is exactly what dancers do. The problem with using sports as a way to exercise is that they're competitive, create arguments, can make a person feel down by not being picked first for a team, and can often make a person injured. Ever since I was young I have always loved to dance. Dance is a very social activity that also requires physical strength and endurance. I always feel happier when I dance because it’s a great way to boost endorphins and lower stress levels. Dance has also enabled me to grow as a person both physically and emotionally. I have been dancing competitively for six years now. Throughout those years I have had amazing opportunities to meet so many inspiring people and make lifelong friends. One of my favorite parts of dance is definitely being part of a team and going to competitions, it’s so much fun! At competitions, I always get the feeling that all of my hard work has paid off. Dance can be to any music, noise, silence, or words, which simply means that dance does not need sound but counts which often can just be the dancer’s breath or the rhythm of a spoken word. People forget to acknowledge that dancing is a passionate form of art expressed through a person’s body movement. It takes many performance skills such as focus, body strength, musicality timing, flexibility, and passion. Every school in the world teaches by the same system. It is understandable to teach literacy; it is extremely important for everyone to learn how to read and write. However, I believe understanding how to use your body is as important. Many people see dancing only as moving your body to music like people see basketball only as throwing the ball inside of the basket. What most of us don’t realize is that there is more than what our eyes can see. When it comes to dancing, the dancer must understand how to use their body properly. For instance, being able to feel each muscle of the body so they can flex or point their toes. Constantly using a part of the body no one really uses on their everyday life, helps to understand and be more aware of the muscles. Furthermore, a lot of people have back problems, or ankle pains only because they don’t exactly know how to properly walk, or stand still. Those are the people who never took any interest in the arts, or creativity itself.
