After the end of the US-Mexican War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 1848. One of the effects of this Treaty was that Mexico was obliged to cede more than one third of its original territory, including what is now California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and parts of other states.

The first significant Latino immigration to the US took place during the California Gold Rush, right after the US-Mexican war ended and the new boundary between both countries was established. Approximately 10,000 Mexican miners entered California and were used as workforce.

Between 1840 and 1890, and not taking these 10,000 miners into account, migration from Mexico to the US was very small, averaging 3,000 – 5,000 persons
