James K Polk was a very important part of our Arkansas History .James K Polk was born 1795 in North Carolina to his mother Jean Knox Polk and father Samuel Polk. James was the first of their 10 children. James was the first president born in North Carolina, and he had attended the University of North Carolina. At the age of 17 he had kidney stones and had to have surgery performed by Dr. McDowell. Polk met Sarah Childress in 1821, he proposed in 1823, they were married in 1824.when James became president Sarah hosted the first annual Thanksgiving dinner.

Polk supported the acquisition of Texas into the United States. It was a major part of his campaign.President Polk banned hard liquor and dancing in the White House.
James K. Polk was the most successful president in American history. Polk fulfilled all his campaign promises. During his administration Polk acquired California from Mexico, settled the Oregon dispute, lowered tariffs, established a sub-treasury, and retired from office after one term.

Polk, the new president, made a proposal to the Mexican government to purchase the disputed land. When that offer was rejected, troops from the United States were moved into the disputed territory of Coahuila. These troops were then attacked by Mexican troops, killing 12 American troops and taking 52 prisoners. These same Mexican troops later laid put upon a US fort along the Rio Grande. This would lead to the conflict that resulted in the loss of much of Mexico's northern territory.US forces quickly occupied Mexico and California Territory, then invaded parts of Northeastern Mexico and Northwest Mexico. The Pacific took control of several garrisons on the Pacific coast.
