How can one be an effective leader? This question is commonly asked, but rarely answered adequately. In the realm of sports, coaches are the leaders of teams and in the higher levels, of entire organizations. Regardless of one’s interest in basketball, there are countless lessons to learn from these successful men: lessons about leadership, effective communication, and making an impact in other’s lives. Men’s college basketball has produced countless coaches who have proven themselves to be effective leaders, communicators, and role models; behind their leadership and communication is psychology and countless philosophies and strategies regarding practice, team captains, and games.

Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
The University of Dayton Men’s Basketball Program. There have been many historical moments with the University of Dayton Flyers Men’s Basketball team, but Mark Weaver recalls the one that meant most to him. It took place on March 24, 1967, in Louisville’s Freedom Hall for the Final Four of the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) tournament against the highly favored North Carolina Tar Heels (Collett 228). This was the third straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Flyers, but their first ever Final Four (Collett 228). It turned out that the Flyers smashed North Carolina, seventy-six to sixty-two.

However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. “The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.

Captains of sports teams are given the stereotype that they are the most athletic player on the team, scoring the most goals and handling the ball best. In truth, captains have a lot of work they have to do that doesn’t even involve playing the sport. Captains are the most looked at player of the game; other players, younger kids and coaches look to them to set examples. They have to set examples in every aspect of the game; athleticism might be part of their job but it is not limited to it. The captain of any sports team must set the leadership standard for commitment, confidence, intelligence, and attitude.
College basketball coach has been the career of my choice, there is a multitude of reasons for this. I have loved this sport since I was four years old and ever since then I have always pictured myself being a part of this sport when the moments are at it’s brightest when the NCAA tournament kicks off. For years I have followed this sport very closely watching as many games a possible with listening to Dick Vitale, Jay Bilas, Bill Raftery, and Gus Johnson loses their minds calling college basketball games. This game is all about having a passion for basketball and life-giving you're all to this sport having extreme dedication. Growing up I was extremely blessed having an incredible coach at every level of sport I participated in. From those experiences I know how much a coach can make a difference in your life. For that reason my dream job is coaching college basketball at any division. It does not matter to me what level, because kids at the D-3 level need just as much guidance and help as student athletes at the D-1 level. During my coaching career I hope to blend two leadership styles in particular together in order to make my athletes better men, but also to keep the game they love fun to play. I feel by taking the Charismatic Leadership style’s enthusiasm and loyalty and mixing it with a Transformational Leaders innovation and emphasis on change, I can be an extremely effective and power leader for my student athletes.
This enabled me to help them achieve their potential, be it through creating innovative reading programs or building a different sports drill, the underlying skills I used facilitated my ability to be an excellent leader. As I had expanded my training experience as a coach I was selected to intern at Spartan Performance at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. I learned to adapt quickly to this fast-paced and dynamic situation as I began to appreciate the importance of teamwork. Athletes were trained in a manner that required multiple interns working together to create ideal training programs while also being taught the technical knowledge from the higher-level interns.
