Over the course of time, communication has always been an important and crucial part of human evolution; none of us can deny it, but what happened to our form of communication when the Internet came into our lives? At first, there was no Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr or any of those social media sites, and we communicated with others through letters, faxes or phone calls. Later, at the beginnings of the Internet, we had certain online pages with chat rooms where people could engage in conversations and exchange ideas, however, not everyone had access to them, and they certainly did not impact our society greatly due to infrequent use of them. Dr Sigman, who has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, a Master of Science degree in The Neurophysiological Basis of Behavior, and a Ph.D, said in the journal of the Institute of Biology that, “A lack of “real” social networking, involving personal interaction, may increase the risk of health problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease, and dementia.” He also added that, “It is not that I am old fashioned in terms of new technology, but the purpose of any new technology should be to provide a tool that enhances our lives.” Before reading his opinion, I had to ask myself if I am using my social media profiles to try to improve my social life, and yes, I occasionally use it with that purpose. Often, I even prefer to interact with people through social networks rather than personally. I am isolating myself from my loved ones and friends. I do not consider myself a social media addict, on the other hand, adolescents are becoming increasingly depended to share most of their personal lives and problems online, and as a result of it, cyberbullying is also evolving into a very common and negative attitude between them. We can conclude that there are a huge deal of negative and positive aspects when we refer to the Internet as we already saw, however, what we should do is to take advantage of every progress in development offered by it, without forgetting that everything in excess is harmful for us. Using your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram account won’t isolate you from the society, but using social networks as the only means of communication is not the healthiest choice you can make. Find the balanced life you need and deserve, including in it an active social life in the outside world too.
