The food stamps program helps low income families survive by providing them with subsidized income for food. Soda has no nutritional value therefor instead of helping individuals by giving nutrition it will contribute to health problems like obesity and diabetes. The United States already has a major obesity epidemic with the lower income at a greater risk of being affected. One reason for this is that healthy food is more expensive than less healthy food. The government should step up and fund programs that promote good quality nutrients to bring down the price and help the nation get in to shape.

Many realize the devastation that can happen to them or their families. If government agencies started to look at junk food like they did at Tabaco the world would be a healthier place to live. According to the USDA, one can of soda contains thirty-nine grams of added sugar. The recommended amount of added sugar for men is 37.5 grams and the recommended amount of added sugar for women is 25 grams. That means one serving for both men and women are above what the government recommends. Why is the government paying its poorest sickest population to drink something that it does not recommend? Lead them in the right direction by subsidizing fruit, vegetables whole grains. Send education packets teaching them how to balance a diet. Encourage planting fresh food and teach them how to live a healthy life style. Take care of the poor by helping them take care of themselves. Some things that the food stamp program allows its participants to buy include red bull Candy, Mixes for alcoholic beverages and artificial sweetener. All things that are known to be bad for the body and not recommended by doctor’s (Christopher). How can the administration say unhealthy food is not good for you, do not eat it but the government will give you money for the unhealthy food we do not
