“Communication- the human connection- is the key to personal and career success” (Paul J. Meyer). Communication is an essential skill that helps us to exchange information and connect to the rest of the world. Written communication is one form of communication that involves the use of written words. In the world that technology is improving, the use of computers and internet connection make the means of transmitting information through writing, which needs proficient writing skills. I grow up speaking, reading, and writing Amharic, my native language, in Ethiopia. Even if English classes are given in Ethiopia since it is an international language, it focuses on the grammar part but not on the writing part of the language. …show more content…

Coming to the country where English is spoken encourage me to acquire knowledge on the basic writing skills, which can help me in my day to day life. ENGL 101 is the first level English course that is given at Montgomery College to give an introduction to college writing. Being a second language learner with no background experience of writing skills needs a day to day practice in order to improve the required skills of writing. The various opportunities, including the writing center that Montgomery College provides help ESL students like me to enhance their knowledge of the basic techniques that are needed for a qualified paper. In this writing class, with the help of my instructor, Professor Michael LeBlanc, I have shown a progress in my writing skills even though I still need to work on some of the skills. Two of my writing strengths are integrating information into essays by paraphrasing based on assigned readings and developing paragraphs with vivid details; however, I still need improvement in demonstrating facility with grammatical issues, such as word …show more content…

Developing a concrete and clear detail in writing an essay is a good means for the readers to experience and become connected to a place or a scene that is described in the paper. In the essay, “A Profile on Evangelicalism”, I have clearly described how the International Ethiopian Evangelical Church looks like. As an illustration, a sentence in paragraph two of this essay, “The church was like a conference room full of single chairs arranged in four rows, with a well-formed stage covered by a red carpet and containing instruments like a guitar, a drum, a piano, and a saxophone, which made me feel like I would be attending a concert.” This way of describing places by giving clear details enable the readers to visualize the church. In addition, the paragraph provides clear images of the church, including how it is organized, how it is decorated, and how the followers and gospel singers dressed up. In the essay, “A Puzzle of Life”, that explains about a spiritual life and doubt, paragraph two illustrates one of my personal experiences that helped me in shaping my belief. I have given a nice detail that provides readers sensory details about the scene that happened in a room with my cousin.
