1.0 Introduction
I have been asked to do research and I have chosen to do research on the caused that lead students to do part time job; part time job effects on student’s performance and; the factors that can help to improve student’s performance. As I aware most of the students of higher education institution do part-time job either in weekends or semester break. In the same time these situations became a phenomenon among students of higher education institution and lower education institution. But, students from higher education are the highest number to do part-time job.
What is part-time job? Actually, there is no ‘part-time employee’ definition in the Fair Work Act. A part-time job is a form of employment that carries fewer hours work per week than a full-time job. Workers are considered to be part-time if they commonly work fewer than thirty or thirty-five hours per week. According to the International Labor Organization, the number of part-time workers has increased from one-fourth to a half in the past twenty years in most developed countries excluding the United States. There are many reasons for working part-time, including the desire to do so, having one's hours cut back by an employer and being unable to find a full-time job. The International Labor Organization Convention 175 requires that part-time workers be treated no less favorably than full-time workers (www.wikipedia.com).

...It is good to do part-time job. However, there are consequences that need to be face when do part-time job. The consequence that students may face is he/she will stranded in his studies. However, this problem can be overcome if the students can manage the time well and find the suitable part time job based on their capabilities. Today high school student is getting the job experience by working at McDonald’s or other fast food restaurants. Working a McDonald’s is not an easy job because the shift hours are not stable and income is not very high. High scholars are thinking that working at a fast restaurant is going to gain an income easily, especially for those in a middle class family that needs a part time job to support their self. It might be a bit of a struggle for the high student to learn to manage their time schedule between school and work. In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni believes that high school students working at McDonald’s can destroy their future. He explains very clear through his point of view that if high school students choose to work at McDonald’s or any fast-food places, it would be a waste of time because they only take advantage of them. Etzioni think that these high school students are set for low paid job because if they don’t continue with their education path then they are stuck or don’t have any other opportunity. On the other hand, I agree and understand his point. High school students are falling behind in school, but I don’t see that working at McDonald’s is what causes them to end their future.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Many students believe that they can handle having a part time job and being a college student at the same time. For some students having a job and being in school can be manageable but there is some students who believe they can manage their personal life and school at the same time. In the talk show Tedx Talk with David Ray, Ray mentions that students with jobs tend to struggle more in college and have more of a chance to drop out, when he states “students have to work part time jobs or multiple jobs to pay for tuition and they do less school work”. College is worth it for the students who know how to manage their personal life with their school life but sadly there is students who do not know how to manage their time appropriately and end up dropping out of college which results to losing
Moonlighting, Dual employment - Employees may not volunteer to do the same or similar work for the same employer without the time being counted as work time. If the employee has two jobs with the same employer the hours will be totaled. Employees are allowed to moonlight, which means working for another employer (Chamberlain, 2003).
For many important and well known companies its people are most important asset. For McDonald’s this applies as well. Employees who demonstrate positive attitudes and ability of commitment strive to be number one in customer satisfaction. For this same reason, McDonalds’s restaurants focus on attracting and hiring the best and at the same time provide the best place to work. Unfortunately McDonald’as well as other companies have to experience staff turnover. Many of these reasons consist of changing careers, going back to school, leaving the area, and even new opportunities they are offered. Although, it can be very expensive to recruit and train staff to reduce turnover, McDonald’ reinforces these steps and makes sure they choose wisely and also treat their staff well. McDonald’ needs and looks for people who want to exceed and deliver great customer satisfaction service. In order for them to make sure they select the best, they must identify quality skills, and or behaviors that applicants must demonstrate in order to be hired and be part of McDonald’s family. Every position or job description has an outline of the regular duties and or responsibilities McDonald’ want their employees to follow. McDonald’ also has a person specification where personal skills and competences can be defined of each applicant.
As a student, it never too soon to look at the job market in which you will be operating as a job seeker, and at what can help you to maximize the chance of having a profitable job. To be attractive to the employer is that students have to acquire during the school time. Nowadays, there have been many researches on 'employability', which is generally regarded as a broader concept of skills in the workplace. It is very common that many high school students hold part time jobs while going to school. When these teens work, they are able to learn and experience life lessons from ethical and moral work. Knowing that school is aways and should be a priority, students should work while in high school because working helps students be more responsible with their lives, help them practice time managment, and also helps students see and experience the real world.
