Have you ever wondered why different cultures have the same tradition but do them in different ways? Martin, from The Medicine Bag, has to go through the same tradition as Dachina, from the video “Apache Girl Preparedness for a Coming-Of-Age Ritual”. However, they do these traditions differently from each other. Why is that though? The text and the video are the same in so many ways. The both involve a family tradition that passes down a medicine bag. With this, the oldest family member will give the person that is passing down the tradition the medicine bag. This means that whoever is suppose to get the medicine bag, will receive it from the oldest family member. In conclusion, the text and the video have some similarities that some of us can relate with as well. The text and the video may have some similarities but they have have differences as well. For example, a difference is the items being put into the medicine bag. The text’s medicine bag had a broken shell of iron kettle, a pebble from the butte, and a piece of a sacred sage. The video’s medicine bag had pollon. They both had different reasons for passing down the medicine bags as well. However, their advantages are different from each other. For instance, the text’s advantage is that Martin gets his grandpa’s medicine bag without doing anything and grows up. This means that Martin realized how his situation was very serious and he accepted the medicine bag very quick after realizing the situation. Now, for the video’s advantage. Dachina had to go through multiple trials in order to become a woman at the age of 13. This is the advantage of the video because Dachina has been waiting for this day her whole life and now, she’s finally becoming a woman.
