In the first chapter of “Writing to Change the World”, Mary Pipher explained how “The Diary of Anne Frank” is the first book that change her view of the universe. Before she read it, she did not believe in the existence of evil in human. After Pipher read the book, she realized “that there were adults who would systematically kill children.” (Pipher 19) Her understanding of humanity become larger to include a hero like Anne, but also the villains who killed her. Pipher lost her spiritual innocence in humanity. “Even though Anne Frank ultimately was murdered, she managed, in her brief and circumscribed life, to tell the truth and bequeath the gift of hope.” (20) Pipher’s though about Anne’s writing is that it “given us all a sense of possible …show more content…

Some of it can come from art, relatively straightforward, or both artful and straightforward. Many effective writers able to bring a clear message through their writing. “Whether they are working on an op-ed piece, a speech, or a poem, skilled writers exercise creativity and conscious control. They labor to make the important interesting, and even compelling, to reader.” (23) The good writers also connect readers to the ideas and experiences that readers have never experience before. For example, “President John Kennedy was so moved by Michael Harrington’s The Other America that he launched the War on Poverty…” (25) Or “The Limit to Growth” by Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, and Jorgan Randers “gave scientists, policymakers, and everyday citizens new ways to frame environmental, energy, and population issues.” (25) Any form of writing can change the world by how writers find their goals and the form that allows them to do their best. It does not need a talent writer to be able to change the world, but an ordinary person can write and change the world every day because “we write with a sense of urgency. We write because we discover that we have something we alone can say. And we struggle on because we still believe in the power of words…”
