The “Diary of Anne Frank” is a real diary written by Anne Frank, during the time of the Holocaust. She describes her days hiding in a secret annex with seven other people. Some days they got along and others they didn’t, but in the end they all respected each other. In the “Diary of Anne Frank,” Anne Frank says, “ I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.” This message serves as a theme throughout the diary. Throughout the diary, she explains how the people she spent her days with were good people at heart. In the beginning of the story, two characters, Miep and Mr. Kraler, showed how they were very good at heart. Both of them helped all the families in the annex and were loyal and unselfish. Miep and Mr. Kraler tried their best to help the families live and survive the war. They brought them food, news, supplies, and kept them secret and safe throughout the story. They also kept Mr. Frank’s store running. “ Miep or I, or both of us, will be up each day to bring you food and news and find out what our needs are.” This piece of evidence explains how they helped the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. Frank is good at heart. Mr. Frank is a very selfless and caring man. He cares for everyone in the annex. When Mrs. Frank finds Mr. Van Daan stealing food, she wants him and Mrs. Van Daan to leave. However, Mr. Frank disagrees. “ You’re speaking in anger. You cannot mean what you are saying.” Mr. Frank doesn’t want the Van Daans to have to live out on the streets. He wants them to be safe in the annex, rather than in the streets where they could be caught. This shows that Mr. Frank is good at heart because he cared for the Van Daans. Kraler and Miep were taken out of the arrest scene, which does not allow the readers to see how they actin real life when they arrest the jews. Mr. Kraler was taken out of the arrest scene which makes the readers wonder what happened to him after the others were taken away. When they were in the Secret Annex, he was downstairs working with the other resistance members or workers when the Nazis barged in. He was shocked that they found out they were hiding jews as he lead up the Nazis to them. The SS officers order Kugler [Mr. Kraler] to lead the way and “Kugler obeys…the men follow them, their pistols drawn” (Müller 6). This means that the SS officers came into Mr. Frank’s building and asked Kugler where the jews were. He obeyed the SS officers by taking them up the flight of stairs to the people in the Secret Annex while he has a pistol behind his body. The reader see how different the arrest scene was because Mr. Kraler was sick in the Annex because he didn’t have a doctor to treat himself because most jews were doctors. He also left before the arrest scene, but in the biography he was there working with the other resistance members. Although Mr. Kraler was shown as a ill man to add tension in the Secret Annex, he was perfectly fine while working downstairs in Mr. Frank’s building. Another important issue that the author brings up is the fact that the Franks were better informed than other Jews about the extirmination camps. The other Jews had no knowledge about these camps, making it a little bit more reasonable for the others to want to stick together as a family. The Franks, however, knew this and they still did nothing to prepare for the Nazis. The author also had some ideas for the Franks to prepare for the invasion when the Nazis came, even though they stayed together. He suggested that Mr. Frank could have had some form of protection, such as a gun; Mr. Frank could have tried to detain the police when they came, while his family could try to run to safety. Sure, Mr. Frank would have been killed of beaten, but he could have done a better job of protecting his family.

Mr. Frank let them stay because they needed a place to hide and since they had helped him out so much in the past by actually teaching Mr. Frank German, he felt it was the least he could do. During Hitler's rule six million people were killed and double possibly triple that was injured just because of what he was trying to accomplish. The Franks, The Van Dann’s and Mr.Dussel have been in hiding for basically 2 years and one month and all of their personalities and relationships have either fallen apart or have grown stronger. By going the secret annex they hoped that they wouldn’t need to go to concentration camps. As time passes many historical events that occurred outside the annex influenced the moods and relationships of the characters.
Everyday, their lives are filled with darkness and degeneracy. The whole world’s scared and they decide to swallow the fear. Growing up in a wartime environment isn’t easy at all. All of their lives have been mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood. Yet, Anne Frank still believes that people are good at heart.

Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl was a very distressing yet amazingly written book. Who would have thought that such a little person could have such a huge effect on the world? Anne?s father lived for many years after the war and made sure that Anne?s diary was published. Her diary was published in 1947 and was then made into a film. This diary helps people remember what Jews had to go through and hopefully reminds them of how lucky they are. By remembering, it is hoped that something like this will never happen again. This book was intriguing while incorporating many life lessons. Discrimination, unfair judgment, and racism are only a few of the many lessons that this book has to offer. With that, after reading this book, we have learned to not take the things we have for granted because in a matter of seconds, days, months, or even years, it could all be gone. As Anne said in her diary, ?In spite of everything, I still believe, people are truly good at heart?.
