Fences, a fiction play by August Wilson tells the story of how Troy and Bono get kinda left out of stuff because they are black and white people are able to do more stuff then black people and how Troy has a problem with his son and what he wants to do with his life. In Fences there's a scene in the book where Troy and Bono want to be able to drive the trash truck because they were only allowed to pick up the trash. Troy and Bono felt like the white people had more power then the black people because they could do more than them when it came to work and going out and doing stuff. Why you got white mens driving and the colored lifting?” and Troy is pretty upset at the fact that their is racial inequality in his job. The white guys got to drive the trucks and the black guys had to lift the cans and dump them into the back of the truck. This type of segregation happened a lot back then and it was pretty typical when it happened. Black men were mainly the guys who had to do the manual labor because they didn't want the white guys to have to do much because they had more power and rights as to their jobs. Troy also says “You think only white fellows got sense enough to drive a truck. That ain't no paper job!” Troy continues to fight with his boss about how blacks con not drive the trucks Troy is fighting for himself and other black guys because they all want higher positions in the sanitation department. Troy makes it seem like black people would be able to drive the trash trucks but they would not be good enough to handle the paper or office jobs and this is also saying how black people are a little bit racist …show more content…

The author says this because he is bring an old stereotype to black people and they said this about black people because it was said that they were just lazy and ignorant and all they liked to do was sing and eat watermelon all day so when Troy says that he was hiding it under his shirt so the white guy didn't see it because the white guy would of probably said something to him about it and maybe the guy who has the watermelon doesn't want it to seem like he is just a typical black guy because his boss is white and the author is wanting us to see how racism was back then and think about how it is
