Horace is a Roman Poet. He states “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which is prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. This means that when you are going through afflictions, your strengths and talents tend to show more than during easier times. I agree with Horace’s statement because people have more emotion when they are going through tough situations. People like artists, actresses and actors, singer, etc. Adversity means difficult or distressed moments in one’s life. In “Revenge of the Geeks”, by Alexandra Robbins, many of the examples given explained how people have been outcasts before but have been able conquer those fears, intimidations, and adversities by their strengths. An example of segregation was during Adolf Hitler’s time of rule. Hitler promised that all Jews would be exterminated so he sent Nazi to persecute Jews, Catholics, handicapped, homosexuals, and Poles because they were different. They were taken to concentration camps. They were given small rations of bread and soup, forced to work several hours in dangerous environments, and taken to crematories to be burnt if they were too weak, etc. A young boy by the name of Eliezer Wiesel was a Jew in a concentration camp with his father. He was first separated from both his mother and his sisters and he never saw them again. His family was his only strength to strive for his life. This helped him overcome the tormented memory of his experience. He continued his life with a fresh start and wrote a novel, “Night”, about the tortures, harmful environments and his insufficient food intake he and his family faced. An example of my family being outcasts was when my grandparents invited both of my mother’s sister’s families to go to breakfast with them. My grandparents invited both of my aunt’s families without inviting my family. This made us feel like outsiders, but we realized that we had each other. Our strengths helped us forgive my grandparents for making us feel like outcasts. We help each other through hardships, distress and
