Reflection is extremely important as it allows for strengths and weaknesses to be recognised, make sense of the situation, and improve care (Jasper, Rosser, and Mooney, 2013). This experience helped me to understand how my own values, communication and interpersonal skills played a part in Mrs Mill’s care, and ways it could have been enhanced. Communication between staff members is vital, something I have learnt from this, ensuring that I seek out support and speak up if I feel a situation isn’t being dealt with appropriately. As I gained more knowledge about Mrs Mills and her condition I believe my ability to communicate with her improved, enhancing the standard of care I provided. My assertiveness improved over the time I spent on the ward as began to feel more adequate in my role and engaged in the care of all patients, team work was a contributing factor to this as interacted with staff easier. Even though my supernumerary status was maintained I felt it important to withhold my values and implement them in my practice as a student nurse (Siviter, 2013) making sure Mrs Mills was treated with respect and dignity and felt in control of her care, even though she struggled to communicate verbally. It was, and is important to me to provide individualised patient-centred care, and this experience taught me how to implement this into practice.
